Hot water heater

We have a suburban SW12DE hot water heater in our fifth wheel trailer. On gas it seems to work as it should. When we put it on electric the water does not get as hot. What could be the problem?
  • Electric elements work or don't but because the electric element is submerged in the water crud can build up on it and lessen the heat transfer rate.

How often do you drain/flush water heater?
How often do you replace anode rod?
  • Pretty easy to replace. Available at Home Depot or Lowes, make sure you get the wrench to remove it. Here's a video that may help:
    element replacement
  • We've never had a problem with the heating element but could it be that it is coated with crud and now as effective? or, could it be that it doesn't work at all and the warm water is what is left over from heating with gas?
Can you check the element or replace it?
  • Our gas does not kick on automatically we have to switch it over to get the water hotter. It never used to do this on electric we always got scolding water.
  • No there has to be a problem. When we shower now we don't even put on the cold water. It has gotten worse over the last couple of months. Could it be possibly a heating element?
  • Ours is the same.
The electric part seems to maintain temperature, but if you use the shower the gas will eventually kick on and bring the water temp back up.
The electric should bring it to the same temperature, but it will take longer than the gas
  • Mine does not get as hot with AC as it does with gas either. Never has. But..it gets plenty hot for showers etc, so I never really ever gave it much thought. Maybe some one else has. We shall see....
