How to clean up old putty tape?

I've been doing some work on my 94 Layton FW. I'm going to put new tape on the door and all the windows and would like to clean all the old tape off. What's the best way to clean the old tape off? I'm thinking of using a plastic putty knife to get the majority off, but what would work for the residue?

  • I ended up using mineral spirits. Tried the acetone and that was taking the paint off.

  • I use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner- available at most auto parts stores. Meant for cleaning adhesive off of automotive finishes.

Acetone or Goo Gone...either one will take that old residue right off.

Old credit card works well also.

    wife's credit card works better
  • Mineral spirits is great stuff. Takes a little rubbing. My old 1983 is unpainted FRP, so I just used acetone. That works wonders.

  • I will sometimes use a hair dryer it help with adhesive. Just a little heats helps more than melting it off... FWIW
