Hydraulic Lever won't retract Lippert 500546 model

Hello,

We just bought a new to us 1999 Fleetwood Discovery Motorhome with a Lippert 500456 leveling system. Been interesting to troubleshoot everything that is wrong with it, but finally hit a snag and the lippert tech chat isn't working the past few days.

The jacks go down just fine, the wires are all tested for continuity, and we are pretty sure the control box is sending the correct signal for whatever buttons are pushed. However, the retract all jacks fails to do anything!

With the retract all jacks pushed, the green signal wire for the dump valve and each of the yellow, orange, and violet ones should all be activated to ground. This happens from the control box, but the jacks won't retract.

We were able to get the jacks retracted by jumping the dump valve power and each of the valve powers directly to 12V off the motor solenoid then the other ends to ground.

Now for where we are stuck... No idea how to actually fix the problem, we have the work around, but I hardly want to be jumping wires every time we are ready to take off to the next location! No exactly comfortable climbing around under the thing :)

I know there is a replacement for the whole control system, but since that seems to not be the problem I am wondering what part in the valve body to look at next...

Any advice would be appreciated!
  • Finally got to chat with a Lippert tech and he gave Lippert replacement part #359259 which is replacement control board and harness which will solve the problem. And yes Powergear was purchased by Lippert. Thank you for the help
  • Your jack system is a POWERGEAR, not Lippert. Lippert did not sell jacks back then. BUT, Lippert purchased Powergear years ago and you have to go thru Lippert to get Powergear parts. Lippert has on line manuals for your system at the LCI1 website. Doug
  • If you are willing to spend a few bucks and you are not sure your troubleshooting skills are good, find a mobile RV tech. Anywhere from $50 to $150 bucks for the tech to check your work.

Sometimes it is hard to troubleshoot by yourself, I have two helpers that don't question what I ask and do exactly what I want them to do, first is my trusty 12 volt test light and second is my piezo siren, Both helpers have long leads with alligator clips and probes. I can hook them up in locations where I can't see my DMM face but can hear the siren or see the light.

So go to the dump valve, disconnect the wire to the dump valve at the manifold and hook up either helper go back inside turn on the hydraulic system push the button to dump. No light or sound indicates a bad switch or control board. If you are comfortable with verifying the operation of the switch, check for 12v on the line side if there is power to the switch, hook one of your helpers up to the load side of the switch and activate it, once again, no light or sound, bad switch. If there is light or sound, bad PC board.

I am of course assuming you have checked any and all fuses.

I'm not being a joker here or anything dumb like that. If I did those things and any of the steps showed a failure, I'd replace the part that appears to have failed.

    Trust your gut.

PS; My DMM leads have pierce points and are threaded and I have threaded alligator clips to use with them so I can work hands free and not have to hold the probes. When I can't see the meter, I use my helpers.
  • sounds like you over extended them and pop breaker. I did this also mine was in the main battery compartment about 4X4 in long and wide at bottom had a flag hanging down just push it back up inside and it will reset system then retract jacks.you may find it in pump area also ever company may put it in a different place.
  • Didn't you prove the control pad/board is the problem, by bypassing it, and the jacks retracted?
    What am I missing?
