Low Profile A/C Units?

Is either the Dometic or Coleman low profile A/C units better than the other? Is one harder to install than the other?

Thanks,
  • Are you referring to replacing one you have or cutting a hole to add another? Both install the same way but I love my Coleman.
  • I am replacing the one I had on the unit because of clearance issues I have where I store the trailer. The trailer is wired for an A/C unit I just need a low profile one. How long have you had your Coleman?

I have 3 Dometic Penguins units that are 11 years old now. I full time and at least one of the units is running in A/C, heat pump or just fan most days.
  • I was looking into ordering the Coleman as an option. Only negative thing I heard was that they are very noisy. They may have to work harder forcing air through a smaller area?

I am leaning towards the Dometic only because they are cheaper. I know nothing about either one's reliability. Nice to hear you have had good luck with your Dometics.

And I've had excellent results with Coleman "Mach" units. But the two that I've had were the simplest ones. One "Select" knob (Fan or Cool, Low or High) and a "Temperature" knob (just a scale, no digits no display) and no Remote Control.
The first was a 13500 BTU that ran 25 years with only cleaning and filters. We now have a (noisy!) 15000 BTU that's needed cleaning, filters, and a blower motor.
I'd pick between RVP and Dometic myself, too. In addition to price, I'd try to look for the least complexity. And I'd shy away from the new "Advent" till they showed a track record and adequate dealer support/service.
  • Is your upper unit controlled by a wall thermostat or do you have knobs in a ceiling assembly? Coleman and Dometic wall thermostats are not interchangeable.

No remote thermostats. I'll have to get the inside shroud that comes with which ever AC unit I decide to go with.
