New RV water pump sputtering air/water at faucets

While draining my clean 50 gallon water tank, I left the water pump running dry for about a half hour, maybe more. When I filled the tank again, it would not suck up any water, indicating that a seal or something in the pump overheated and went bad. Anyway, I replaced the pump with similar model and GPM and pressure. Now it splutters a lot of air with the water. I checked the hose fittings and there is no leak. I took off the pump and ran a hose into a bucket of water for it to suck up, and it works ok with no sputtering. Any ideas? Also, there is a hot water line valve I noticed near a T-fitting to/from the hot water tank. Should this be open or close when using the water pump normally? I tried it both on and off, and still get the air sputtering. Any ideas? Happens with either cold water, hot water, and both. Thanks!
  • LOL. After re-reading my own post, I went out and checked the inputs to the pump, and tried tightening them some more, and there is a little bowl strainer on the pump input that was not not all the way tight. I squeezed that down tighter, and viola, FIXED!

How do I delete my post??

You can't delete your post but you can edit it and replace the text with something like "Problem Solved" or "Fixed" or "Ignore" or whatever makes sense to you.
  • Or, leave your post so someone else learns about tightening the bowl...
  • You didn't hurt the water pump because they're made to run dry there is nothing in it that is damaged by running without water.
  • No, leave it up, then read all the responses that didn't bother to read anything past your first post.

That's right, we specialize in popcorn and beer and won't hesitate to consume a lot of it. :)

The old pump does not work anymore. The new one works fine now. Something is wrong with the old one..
