Odd battery, no caps to check & add water?

Ultra power RV24
It has a flat top and although there is a split in the top, I can't pry it off. There is a small hole in to top section on either side. Are there releases in those to get the top off? There is the idiot watt level window but I plan on leaving in in place with the charger on it for winter.

If the words "maintenance free" or similar was on the battery I would have understood. All the so-called maintenance free ones I've previously owned still had caps. This is my first sealed one.

I like how the pictured installed battery with the article has water caps on it, the standalone battery pic does not.

According to Ultrapower, the RV 24 is not listed as maintenance Free. They do not show a RV-24, but they do show a EV-24 Now, to your statement about previous batteries were not really sealed. Maintenance batteries mostly have NO removable caps even if they have caps. They are glued or locked somehow to prevent you from accessing the cells. Of course, after 39 years in the RV business, except for AGM batteries, I do not believe that you can have RV deep Cycle maintenance free batteries. They sell them, but I would not want or use such a battery for deep cycle use. Seen too many failures of them over the years. Doug

  • yes that's because they are called no maintenance batteries

What exactly does that mean ?

Maintenance free (AGM) batteries have been around for about 30 years now but just started to come into common use in the last 10 or so.
They are better than the standard wet cell batteries with caps.

They are designed NOT to be opened; don't try to defeat that.
They will only lose water if GROSSLY over charged, which is hard to do with standard chargers.
  • sounds like a sealed battery ,no maint to that type of battery. they work just fine, but I like the open tops so I can check water level. .
