Power outage

Well it is the first real world test of my Unisolars, LandStar and Dekas. We have a power outage from some storms that moved through. I elected not to put them in the camper yet, thinking they would do me more good here for now. Sure enough.

Without the big 2500 w inverter I cannot use the system to run my large fridges. I do have a small 12v fridge I can move my daughter's insulin to which will run a very long time on the main AGMs plus my wide variety of charged up individual batteries. Just so happens I topped a number of them off this evening and a large one is always on a float charger.

So far the AGMs are doing lot duty with a 26 w CFL that puts out 100w equivalent. If power is out in the morning I will move the batteries back outside to charge from solar. It's warm in Houston so when I move inside, they may get to run a fan for the evening.

The camper awaits with it's topped off group 24 and 2 bottles of propane. If I move insulin out there the solar and AGMs will go too, but I don't think I will need to.

We shall see.

  • Nice setup!

Edited my last post. Should have read down *by*, not down to. I have no desire to deep cycle my AGMs unless I really need to. They are more like telecom UPS batteries to me than regular cycling batteries.

  • Solar is great, got some on our stick house. Lots of nice snow here, still coming down. Grid went down about 5 am (clocks stopped). Our battery backup kicked on via Xantrex Inverter. Wife is on O2 24x7 and we both use CPAP machines. Everything just kept running fine, above plus fridge, freezer, and boiler. We have several battery banks, and only small 200 AH (at 48 volts) was connected. It was still doing fine at 4 pm when grid power returned, never had to switch in our bigger bank.

Now if the sun would melt about 18" of snow off my collectors ....
  • Worked great. Still have not really baselined the AGMs yet. Been alternating between floating them and charging them once a week. Need some really good short wires and my biggest inverter just to get a real load on them and do a proper base line down by maybe 30, 40 or 50%.

But it did work out realizing that how I used the system, it was better at the house than on the RV for now.

My wife misses the whole house autostart genset we had at the last place!

This is just a ploy for gas stations to charge more.

I can see no excuse at all for gas stations to have some generator back-up, in order to be able to keep some pumps and cash-register working. They just don't want to deal with the extra hassle.

I have got to use my trailer resources two years in a roll here now. The whole county was off line for 12 days a couple of years back and last year we was down again again power wise for a few days...

Sure is nice to run some extension cords into the house from the OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer to some lights and the HDTV. Also nice to power up the fridge a coupe hours a day as well...

We had a block party every night for two weeks two years ago... Cooked up good food on the grille and watch HDTV in the patio area. Then everyone grabs their flashlights and heads for their house haha...

Two of us here had the 2KW Hondas so we put them in kids wagon and pulled around the small neighborhood here and re-charged fridges for a couple of hours if anyone wanted us to do that... Go alot of free coffee and good conversations haha...

Now there is more 2KW honda generators in the neighbor hood.

The only problem we ran into county wise was finding a gas station that was running on emergency power. I ran out of gas from my lawn mower jeri-can about the forth day. Was just about ready to use my OKLAHOMA CREDIT CARD but then someone found a gas station to go to and get some gas...

PLAN Bs worked out great for us...
