Roof Top Ac Unit not working

I am having an issue with my Roof top AcUnit. The Unit will not work with the Generator Running. I also hooked up our portable generator to the shore line and the generator is still not functioning. I went and checked the circuit breaker for the AC and it wasn't tripped. I tried shutting it off than back on and still nothing. Everything else appears to be working. I tried to see if just the fan would work but nothing. We did have an issue at the end of November when the main generator would be running than all of the sudden we would loose all power in the RV. The Generator would be running but no power. IF we ran our portable generator off the shore cord there would be power. Not sure if the two issues are connected but I thought I would share. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If the A/C doesn't run on either the generator or shore power then I'd start following the wires. The shore power line and generator should both run into a Transfer Switch box. This unit normally defaults to shore power, but when the generator is running it will switch to take power from the generator. If the Transfer Switch has loose connections or burned contact relays that could cause your problem.

If the input to the Transfer Switch is ok on shore power, but not on generator, then you also have a generator problem. But I'd skip that until you get things working on shore power. So if the output of the Transfer Switch is ok when you're on shore power, then go to the main breaker box. The output of the Transfer Switch goes there next. Check for loose connections, broken wires, blown fuses or tripped breakers.

If the outputs from the main breaker box are ok, then your problems are downstream of there and it's time to look at the inputs to the A/C.

    Hope this helps,

BTW, I had two similar problems on my RV. One was a broken wire coming out of the generator in which case things ran on shore power but not on the generator. The other problem I had later was a loose connection on the Neutral bar in the main breaker box. In this case nothing worked on either shore power or the generator.
  • My rig has two air conditioners and a 30-amp service. There is a switch above the microwave in a compartment that will allow me to Select the front OR the back A/C. You might check your switch (if you have one).

To run my front A/C from the generator, the following conditions must exist:
    • The generator must be running and producing power
    • The breaker at the generator must not be tripped
    • the cord must be free of corrosion and plugged into the internal 30-amp outlet...I have no transfer switch
    • the breaker at the electrical box just below my fridge must not be tripped
    • the air conditioner selection switch must pointing switched to use the front A/C
    • the A/C must be turned on.

Any one of these 6 things goes wrong and you'll have no air. I've experience every one of the six failures, so don't beat yourself up if you find it to be the case.

As a side note: I've since upgraded my rig with a separate 20-amp cord so that I don't need to choose between the front or the back A/C.
  • Find your fuse panel and the Fuse for your A/C DC electronics. Pull the fuse out and reinstall it. It never hurts to check the fuse to see if it is still good. But don't be surprised if it is good and then your A/C starts.

Is this A/C controlled by a Wall Thermostat, or Knobs on the Unit itself?

Has it been working? Anything changed since it was?

Does anything run when you turn the A/C on? Specifically, the FAN?

What's Make, Model, Year of the A/C?
  • Well, start measuring at the power dist panel where the circuit breakers are located. If power is present, then measure at the AC circuit breaker.
If no power, go back and measure at the Generator.

    Report back for more help.
  • Very possible I might need to hire someone at some point but I am pretty handy if I can get alittle direction I can figure it out
  • The Ac doesn't work on shore power . If I am going to get my volt meter out where should I test??
  • Does it work on shore power? If so, I would look at the Transfer Switch.

  • If the compressor wouldn't start, I would say look at the capacitors, but because the fan wont run then its time to get out the VOM.
