  • Those are all pretty big units. If you're boondocking a smaller 5000btu A/C would do the trick for an rv bedroom, a Class B, etc.

    Many moons ago I posted about a guy on the Aliner group who used three 220amp batteries/solar panels to run his 5000btu without any issues.

  • Unfortunately, batteries and solar panels are not included with the AC unit according to Amazon. The future looks promising for solar's ability to power high current items for extended periods, but at this point I will stick with our Champion 3100 for such extreme duties. With gas at $1.80 a gallon in our neck of the woods, our Champion will easily power our AC for roughly 50 cents an hour. We love solar as does our RV battery bank, when temps are moderate and the skies predominately clear, we can forego any genny usage aimed at replenishing our 12Vdc reserves.

    I have looked at these before their specs always seem fishy, says 16,000 BTU cooling in the description, but 2500 watts cooling in specs which is only 8000 btu's. Pulling only 800w there is no way it could do 16k btu that would be a COP of almost 6!

    Since they can't seem to correctly describe what it does I don't think I would risk that kind of cash on it.

    Would be nice to do a 48v lithium system and run some efficient dc A/Cs off it directly with a dc genset and just a big 48v charger for shore, then 48v inverter for misc 120v.

    I think most folks would rather just run an AC generator and plug in their shore cord.

    If a "whole DC" solution is needed, the motors to run a compressor are already in existence. Google "treadmill motor". I have one here that I pulled to use in a drill press. It is rated at 90 VDC and develops a ton of torque. IIRC, it's RPM rating is 3200 RPM. Since it's DC driven, a speed controller can control the RPM.
  • On the Mobile Kodgers blog, he shows a few shots of a guy camping in a modest size cargo trailer, which supposedly has enough solar and battery to run a small window AC. The pictures show panels extending beyond the trailer's roof.
