Unknown Brand AC/DC Inductive Ammeter?

A hurricane got to my Triplett and made it play "forever possum". Rather than spend another hundred bucks (I hated the 9-volt battery needed), this critter "looks" promising for forty four dollars. But looks can be deceiving. The reviews, stars, are there but it's a l-o-n-g way down here to yield an "aw sugar!"

MASTECH MS2108A 400 AC DC Current Clamp Meter

Forty four dollars

Consensus rules. Yay or nay?
  • I've had some very high quality true RMS AC/DC clamp on hall device current probes along with a couple of import inexpensive ones.

For most of my RV/auto use, the cheap ones with a hall sensor for DC current do just fine. Typically won't zero completely, may read 0.1A or so, and are not well shielded with a good mu metal shield so they have some error due to rotation wrt earths magnetic field. And most have a decent RMS converter for AC current measurement.

Haven't used the mastertech, but probably a "generic" meter made in taiwan.

If you need a decent qualitative tool, should work just fine. If you need very low current measurements and/or an excellent tool for quatitative measurements, well then your into fluke territory.
  • It uses (3) AAA batteries. A damned sight better than a POS 9-volt. I see this one also measures capacitance to 4K uf. Hz, volts, diode, yadda. Lucky i still have my 2 thousand dollar precision Manganin calibration shunt with me.
  • You might aw well give it a try, then write back. I probably have to replace my $350 Amprobe AC/DC clamp on meter. In the DC mode, mine will not re-set to zero amps anymore. So it reads about 63.4 amps when I turn it on, and say I am using 2 amps, it will either read 61.4 or 65.4, depending on what direction the amperage is flowing. . .

    So let me know!

    Thanks,

    Fred.
  • FWIW, I've had a AC Amp only Mastech clampmeter M9805G for many years and use it alot. Can't remember what I paid but it's big, bulky, and apparently rugged.
