UPDATE Power Gear slide out motor gone

I took the coach to Robbins RV in Ormond last week and the slide is fixed. They were prompt, gave me a discount off of retail for the motor and one hour labor later its fixed.

When I came to pick it up, it was parked under a covered building.

I highly recommend them.

2005 Fleetwood 38N (three slide DP).

So this past weekend we went camping over the 4th.

Went to put living slide out; I hit the out button for a few seconds, slide started to go out, then I stopped to move my seat up as it interferes. That was all she wrote. Never moved again. We camped with one slide in.

I assumed it was a motor gone bad; the kitchen slide was replaced a few years ago.

About halfway home we stopped for fuel and a trucker said he saw a cable dragging. I looked and it was long enough to hit the ground midships. The drivers son volunteered to crawl under and try to plug it back in but couldn't find anywhere to plug it so as not to tie up space had him secure it so it wouldn't drag. Looked like a 6 pin Molex type nylon connector.

I was hoping it had just came unplugged and just had a friend stop by to see if he could plug it in and he reported that the motor and most of the case was gone! You can see the gears and the housing that holds the shaft bearing is there and not much else.

So my questions are for those of you who have replaced their motor; it looks like most motors on Ebay just have a few wires coming out.

I called Fleetwood last week when this happened and their motor was $630 plus shipping. Ill call back and ask for schematics and ask if the motor come with a plug ready to install or what else I will need to fix it.

I will look at the rear slide tomorrow to see what I can learn as well. It can be accessed from the inside.

I will keep the thread updated.

I had a PG motor self destruct the gearcase a few years ago on my bedroom slide.
Neither PG nor Fleetwood would sell the parts-- only a complete motor/gearcase assembly.
In looking around, I found that RV Collision and Restoration in Clermont had purchased stock from dealers that had gone out of business and had a huge amount of just about every PG motor. I took my broken one in and we matched it up and I'll just say that the price was more than reasonable. They also have a location in Ocala. It might be worth a call and drive over and save hundreds of $$'s... this was probably 5 years ago, so who knows what they might still have. I dealt with Armondo at Clermont who was very helpful - since you have the p/n, maybe they can see if if they have the correct on on the shelf.

Thanks Doug; I was hoping you would check in. Your input is so appreciated.

In this case, since the motor is gone, I think paying extra for the Fleetwood factory replacement is worth the extra change so that (I assume) I am getting the correct motor. It bothers me a bit that the part number I got from FW crosses to so many other motors on Ebay.

What concerns me is that when the motor fell off, did it take part of a harness off with it and what is involved in replacing it.

Have you ever seen where a gear case cracked and failed and the motor fell off?

I am also freaking out that that big hunk off metal damaged a tire or toad or someone else. If so; sorry.

Remember ALL PG motors are not the same even if they look alike. You need to get the same exact motor that will have the same Torque and Horsepower. Failure to do that will result in a motor that cannot do the job. Over the years I have replaced motors other shops installed on Fleetwood PG slides because they just installed any PG type motor and the motors were not powerful enough to do the job. Especially if you have a level floor slide out. The wrong motor will extend just fine, but does not have the power to bring the slide up that first 6 to 8 inches. Odds are you have a 4 wire motor. 2 wires are the heavy dc in and out pos and neg wires and the other 2 are the 22 gauge electric brake wires. The bad news is- since the original motor is gone(which has the info needed for a correct match), you may need to contac Fleetwood and Powergear and see if the replacement motors they recommend are the same part.
