I have been wondering how to make water pump run more quietly; trying not to disturb sleeping dogs and spouse in middle of night when using on-board water tank. Have seen suggestions on this forum such as adding accumulator tank, or wrapping water lines with swimming pool "spaghetti tubes". In my RV parts catalog, I see a "pump silencing kit" consisting of two "36-inch soft tube risers" and two connectors. Price $26.79. I bought the kit and used the hoses because I needed some additional hose length when I installed the accumulator tank. It was a large one or two gallon metal tank by Shurflow. I mounted the pump on the tank and then the tank on compartment wall with rubber between the tank and the wall. The large accumulator tank did a nice job of cutting down on pump always coming on. I don't know that the additional hoses helped any because the original hoses were soft so they didn't do a lot of banging on things.Bill

Installing a section of water hose on each side of the pump will help. This is basically the same as the kit you mentioned. Also make sure the pump is isolated from the floor on a piece of rubber, and that the pipes do not touch the walls by putting a piece of foam rubber between the pump and wall. The accumulator tank will not make the pump quieter but will lessen the frequency of operation.

I put in a quart accumulator, and now my pump is very quiet.Also if the water lines vibrate while the pump is on, try changing them to another style of water line. The steel braided ones at Home Depot are less likely to transmit vibration than the PEX tubing used throughout the rest of the RV. Fred.

I put an old foam type mouse pad under my water pump and it helped a lot. It can barely be heard coming on now. That was about 7 years ago and it is still there.

Quiet water pumps are nice in some ways. On the other hand, if the pump starts running when it should not be running, I want to know before I step in a puddle. :)Ed

Winnebago installed a thick felt like pad under the pump and used the flexible lines. That helped but did not eliminate the noise. Some of the noise comes from the PEX lines going to the faucets and vibrating against things it contacts under the floors and inside walls.

I don't have room for an accumulator tank but I bet that having one would make big improvement.

Is there a problem with turning the pump off at night? Or are we talking sleeping during the day?

An impeller type (like that is used on a macerator pump) would burn itself out quickly if run dry. A diaphragm type will be able to be run dry for a while and still be usable.

Dumb question. Why can't they make a rotary pump instead of the diaphram type? It would be a LOT quieter. I have changed my hoses, placed the pump on rubber, fastened down, let it float, bought a shurflo smart sensor variable speed pump and yet it still sounds like a woodpecker is trying to get in.

The small accumulator does more than just quiet the pump. The pump runs for a shorter period of time and does not turn on and off as frequently. This saves electricity and wear and tear on the pump. I think it also uses somewhat less water when you turn the faucet on really low. (Every so often, check the air pressure in the accumulator.)

We have done all that too and the pump is definitely much quieter.

One time we were parked in a somewhat noisy parking lot having lunch and did not hear the pump as it emptied the FW tank because one of the low point drain valves was leaking. But, I still prefer it quieter.

But I bet it is quieter than without all that stuff. ;)

OP - I have the accumulator tank as well as some rubberized foam under the pump and the noise is cut down significantly in addition to the pump not cycling on as much as without it. In short, anything you add to silence the pump will cut down the noise to some degree, so yes it works.

I used the steel braided lines from Lowe's and I can hardly hear the pump now. I love it as it doesn't wake the campground anymore when in use. If I remember right the hose and fittings from Lowe's was cheaper than the kit. JMO
