Water system on 2006 Starcraft 14 R/T

Hi all.
I bought a used 2006 Starcraft 14 R/T pop-up camper recently. I have been in the process of checking all systems and found everything to be working well and in good shape except one. I have the original Owners Manual, but I found a few errors and it is also sorely lacking in detail. I also got very little "training" and this is the first RV we've owned. I hope you can help.

I filled the internal (under floor) 35 gal. water storage tank, turned on the pump and I'm getting mostly air through the faucets. Some trickle of water from the cold side with approx. 80% air sputtering, and nothing from the hot faucet. I'm connected to 110v shoreside power. Earlier in the day I tested the water heater with shoreside hose connected and it worked well, both hot & cold sides of the faucets.

What am I missing???:?

Thanks for any advice/help you can provide!

Chris
  • Thank you gentlemen for your quick replies and input. The problem is solved and all works as it should now. Old Biscuit: I was thinking the same thing last night as I turned in...it's got to be sucking air. I've been under & all around almost every mm of this unit and it is in very good shape. So...I checked the valve on the winterizing hose in the cabinet where the pump & water heater tank is located and sure enough, the valve was open (right on Old Biscuit!). Closing that valve was the solution. The "mechanic" that supposedly checked out all the systems before I picked up this RV must've left it open. Human error is almost always the explanation for such mysteries. LOL

RoyB: Your rig looks exactly like mine...except mine has green accents and higher brushed aluminum deck rails. What year is yours?
Your drawings are superb. You must be an engineer type.:-) Great job on the electrical lay out. (Please come do mine now!) A few questions: what is the 2-pin connector to the tow vehicle used for? Why are there THREE battery select switches? Have you found that TWO batteries are useful or needed?...I have only one as of now.

    Thanks again gents,
    Chris

This is almost my waterflow layout on my 14RT...

I have an additional valve between the water pump and the freshwater tank line where I can switch to a hose that is laying in the floor to be used to stick down a bottle of pink antifreeze. I however don't use the pink antifreeze method for winterizing. I use the BLOW OUT method with my portable tankless 12VDC air compressor.

Also not shown is the three hot water bypass valves which is laying in the floor where my hot water heater is located. Since you have already used your hot water heater using city water hookup these three valves must be in the correct position.

I would also inspect under the trailer where the water line connection is coming from the fresh water tank. My hose is not well protected from underbrush etc when I am back off the beaten trail and you may have a damaged water hose line here...

I had a terrible experience the first trip being off road with my 14RT as underbrush snagged my rats-nest wiring under my 14RT and pulled a few wires out. It seems there was no rhyme or reason on how the underside wiring was installed. The wires all came from a couple of 3-inch holes in the floor and went every which way under the trailer to get from point A to point B. I fixed all of this by installing a wrap around 3/4-inch PVC flex conduit and PVC electrical junction boxes where wiring was coming thru the floor. Now all of my wiring is enclosed in a PVC conduit setup.

Looks something like this drawing shown in BLUE under my 14RT.

I hope you will Love your 14RT OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer as much as I have mine. I have drug mine all over everywhere with my 4WD F150 truck camping off the power grid. Always draws a crowd from other campers wanting to look at it...

  • Check the suction side of pump (line that goes from tank to pump) for any loose fittings, cracked fittings or possibly another line that has an open valve on it other line could be part of a winterizing kit where you stick the line down into a jug of anti-freeze and use pump to discharge it thru plumbing lines).

You are sucking air...that's why it worked OK on city water connection but not when using the pump
