What to use to clean oily film on outside of 5th wheel

Hello,

Due to health issues our 5th wheel has been in storage for almost two years. It was in an outdoor lot that the land owner started leasing space to the Marcus Shale companies here in SW PA. The owner cancelled all RV leases to focus on the Marcus Shale so I have my RV here in my driveway.

I think the trucks running around have left an oily black specked film all over the outside of the RV. I kept my roof vents open for fresh air and the inside had a film on everything inside. I suspect that this might be from the diesel exhausts from all the trucks. We went from around 10 trucks to well over 150 on the lot. We cleaned the inside with Dawn dish soap and Magic Eraser and are making progress.

My question is the outside. I tried the Dawn on a small section and it took some of the oily feel off but still looks dirty / oily.

Can anyone recommend a cleaner that can be used to get all the dirt / oil off? I know that once the dirt is off there will be elbow grease required to get it white again. I used Bar Keepers Friend in the past but with that oily residue I don't think it would work very well.

I have a pressure washer and was thinking about spraying it using the soft soap setting with some Purple Krud Cutter but don't want to damage anything

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Dave

I got this from a Google search for `oil film on fiberglass'

I would try that in an inconspicuous area first. It may dull the shine.
  • Dawn dish detergent has always been my first finish safe "go to" product for oil films on vehicles.
  • Simple Green does wonders for us. It even took the black marks off our whitewater raft where the aluminum frame rested on the tubes.
  • Deodorized Kerosene (not diesel) works wonders for me. But immediately after washing each section I follow up with Dawn and a good rinse. Unfortunately anything seems to remove polish wax in the process. It all boils down to a lot of work IMHO.

X2,-Same with Awesome. A terrific cleaner but will dull the fiberglass and damage paint. As said by Scott-try somewheres where it would not be noticed. I would use Barkeepers Friend. It was the recommended cleaner when ZEP was the rage on making dull fiberglass shine.

  • The best degreasing detergents are those having a Butyl base. Formula 409, Awesome, and Simple Green are examples of those. Some of the Citrus based cleaners will cut grease too.

If I had to do this job and didn't want to go to great lengths choosing a soap, I'd use Krud Kutter followed by Jasco liquid prepaint cleaner. The KK will clean the oil off and the Jasco will remove any oxidation, resulting in a shiny surface.
