A bad u-joint can be felt if you have the hubs locked and crank the wheel hard in one direction or the other. With one or both sides in the air, spin the tire, if its a bad u-joint it will stop the tire from spinning and resist you. I have one that seems to having intermittent problems as you described. Randomly (very random) the truck will pull to the right and not easily return to center. I have not had the time and weather to verify if its going bad, but I pumped it full of fresh grease and even though I did so 3 months ago I still got 6 pumps into the joint before there where signs it was full.

You can check the ball joint. Jack up that corner then with a pry bar located beneath the tire, leverage the tire/wheel up and down to see if there is any play.

Some of the F250s had issues with the front breaks hanging a little. The pins needed cleaning in order for them to release fully.

Geez, some of these guys should become comedians....NOT! Too much time on their hands I guess.

When my truck had badly worn ball joints, I had a clunking in the front end when turning and the steering would occasionally stick when backing in my trailer so I would strongly suspect that is your issue. I suspect that the responses of front axle joint forget that a Ford does not have any moving drivetrain parts in the front end when in 2wd (as long as everything is working correctly) unlike a Dodge. Please let us know what you find out.

Bad axle u-joint is what I am hearing from your description.
