2015 Calorado

I have a 15 Chevy. Colorado Z71 4x4 crew cab. 6cyl. tow rating 7000 lb. looking at a 21/22 ft. TT weight about 4000lb. hitch weight bout 450 lbs. single axle. wondering how this will work in the real world?
  • Thanks for the info.! OP what’s your numbers on truck and camper? Here in Florida I see some midsized trucks pulling small campers. I just saw a Honda Ridgeline pulling a 22 or so foot Sunline trailer yesterday. I’m thinking you should be good depending on those numbers. My buddy is buying a diesel Colorado, but it sounds like he needs the Z71 not ZR2 because of payload. Anywa he’s got a small TT to tug around.
  • The diesels have the 6 speed transmission, the transmission referenced above is the 8 speed, it only comes behind the gas engine. When the 8 speed first came out there were some teething pains but they were worked out by the 2019 model year.

Payloads for most Colorados hover around 1500 lbs, the ZR2s are around a 1000 because of the DSSV shocks and suspension changes.

I am towing a 19 ft. double axle trailer with a 2016 Colorado. Have been all over the East coast with three trips to Florida. No problems but you know it is back there. Average between 12 and 14 mpg. I put on a WD hitch, not because of the sag, but to take out some of the bounce on the Interstate bridges in SC and GA. As long as you don't have a 2017 0r 2018 Colorado with the **** transmission you will be good to go.

What transmission problems are theses trucks having? Reason I ask and sorry if I hijack the thread...don’t mean to but a coworker looking at one with the diesel.. ZR2 I think that’s what he said that he was buying.

  • What Marty said...
Although the V6 is actually 305 hp when you wind it up tight and tq is 269ft lbs.
How it will pull is akin to an early 2000s 5.3 V8 in a half ton.
It will pull the trailer capably, but it will work at it in the hills. As long as you're ok winding it up on the uphills and locking out a gear or 2 and letting the engine breath well the rest of the time too, it'll get the job done.
IMO, payload is not a big concern with the tongue weight. Call it 600lbs plus for the sake of argument, as long as you're reasonable with the additional "stuff" you're hauling in the truck bed. And if it is a bit much, a wdh can easily take a few hundred lbs and re distribute it for you.

As long as your expectations are moderate, it will do fine.
  • whats the gvwr of the trailer and the payload of the truck. this will likely be your limiting factor by more than you think.
  • Mike,
Your 4.3 made maybe 200 hp or so. The new one is 285HP and 305 lb ft of torque. With the newer 6 sp, this puts more torque to the rear wheels than my C2500 with a vortec 350 can in first gear. My swag, it will pull just fine!
But like a LOT of smaller lighter chassis rigs, payload is usually the enemy!

  • I pulled this trailer with a 1996 s10 ZR2 with the 4.3 liter.

It wasnt winning any races but did well.

That had a 5500 lb tow rating.

The thing with the 4.3 is it made all its torque at 2800 rpm.. So on the highway in 3rd I was in the power band at 65 MPH.

The new colorados are way better.

Thats what I am going back too eventually.

Ill be getting me a colorado and going back to a 7.6" trailer. Tandem axle.

I dont like slides and that camper was perfect for us.
  • What is the tow rating for the truck as equip'd from the manufacturer? If within this spec and you have a good equalizer hitch with sway control why would you have an issue?
