2016 ram 2500 question???

looking at a 2016 ram 2500 to tow a 5th wheel.
my question has to do with the box length.
many of what I am looking at have a 6ft 4in box length,,, is that length the standard or long enough to tow a 5th wheel without having to buy a special slide hitch nor have to worry about the 5er hitting the back windows?
or do u need the 8ft bed?

the trucks are crew cabs if that matters.

thanks
  • We are on our second short bed dodge.
Our first one was a 2012 Dodge 2500 Mega Cab We purchased the slider hitch but never used it in the 2 years of using that truck with our 40' long 5er, but she has the rounded corners up front.

We are now in a 3500 dodge crew cab. It's nice having the shorter truck but the bed is still the same length.
We still have the same slider in it and we have never worried about hitting the back window.
Have done u-turns and tight backing in and never an issue.
Granted it's nice to have incase the need ever arises but just watch your surroundings and practice and won't have an issue.
  • I have the 6' 4" short bed in my '03 Dodge/Cummins. My old '97 5th wheel trailer has the flat square corner profile so yeah I need a slider.
Its used when backing in tight conditions.
If you choose a new gen 5er with the notched/rounded front corners then a slider may not be needed. This is where your RV dealer or a experienced hitch installer that is familiar with these issues can help you.
  • Depending on the yr of the 5er, you might be better off with a slider. My '14 5er has rounded corners. I have a non sliders and a 6.4 bed with a backrack. I can turn almost 85* before I hit the backrack.
  • Why limit yourself? Get a 3500 for nearly the same money. Heck, get a long bed too. The extra 2 feet of carrying capacity is worth its weight in gold.
  • We just bought our second Ram. 2016 2500 CC 4WD with a 6.4 Hemi.
It seems to be a perfect tow vehicle for a 2016 Cougar 279---wish we could say the same happy words about the trailer. We use the truck for running around and the thought of a long bed made us a bit cautious for in town maneuvers.
Anyway, this truck works well for us.
  • The vast majority of fivers are towed with a short bed. I have a Pullrite Superglide, and it works very well. Since you must buy a hitch anyway, I would recommend the auto slider. Unfotunately, they don't retrfit easily into the new Ram well -- but it can be done.
  • Hi. I have a 2016 Dodge 2500 diesel with 4 doors and a 8 foot box. I just like the extra box room compared to the 6.5 box. I tow a 30 foot 5th wheel and the ride and handling on the highway even in side wind is very good. The parking in town is more difficult with the truck when we use it to go site seeing. However, we always find a parking place. I just love that exhaust brake. My old 2004 Dodge did not have a exhaust brake. Jim2007
  • Can speak on the slider hitch but the long bed will ride and tow much better.
But yes it can be a real pain sometimes too. It's a trade off.
  • Save your self a lot of headaches!!! Get the standard/long bed truck. Get the 5th wheel prep. Step up to a 3500.

Install one of these, you will thank me for all the excellent advice! :B

  • Get a 3500 if going diesel. Gas 2500 payloads are around 3000lbs. Diesel 2500 payloads are around 21-2200lbs. Diesel 3500 payloads are around 38-4000lbs.
    All SRW.
