- GeezeExplorerHad one pass me the other night on interstate that looked like the one in photo above. What caught my eye was all of the LED lights on the front as it was coming up in my rear view mirrors. Very impressive! I could tell it was GM but not sure which model.

My Ram goes 10,000 miles between oil changes. I use it to haul my camper and a trailer. It goes through a tank of DEF about every 3,000 miles or so. Having a continuous level gauge is very nice. Having easy access to the DEF port is very nice too.
I don't know what year you have, I picked up my RAM 3500 the first of May and the dealer flashed an update that addressed transmission shift smoothness and DEF usage. You may want to check to see if an update is available for your truck. - N-TroubleExplorer

The 2017 HD GM trucks are getting the next gen Duramax and new frames. 2016 HD will be a short model year. The 16 HD's wont show until Nov. or so and the new HD will be here late Summer. So I was told.
Thanks for the dates but are you sure about the new frame? The current frame is only 5 years old and it has all the same weight ratings as Ford and Dodge.
I highly doubt frame changes. As you noted it went through a big chassis update in 2011 and manufacturers don't build chassis for 5yr lifecycle. More like 15+yr... The current GM chassis is very competitive in its current forum. None of the articles I have read on the next Dmax truck mention anything about frame/chassis changes. We'll see... - transferredExplorer

I haven't used a full tank yet in almost 5000 miles. I've only towed about 600 of those miles, though.
I think the difference in the amount of DEF the three use isnt close to material in the scheme of things, unless you rupture your GM tank and it empties all at once. :B
LOL, or I can keep on trucking when you need to stop for fuel and def because I have a larger fuel tank and much better def usage.;)
I'll grant you the fuel tank - I'd take an extra 4 or 5 gallons for sure. The DEF deal is silly to worry about, though. That stuff is about $8 for a 2.5 gallon jug at wally world. At that rate I don't really care if my truck pees a little more.
All three of the diesels are good trucks and they all have pros and cons. For some reason trucks are like our favorite football teams - we all argue too much about them. - Me_AgainExplorer IIIMy new RAM DEF gauge dropped like a rock the first 1000 miles, it then has moved down very slowly for the next 1000 miles. At 2000 it is now at 1/2. I am going to go a little longer and then try a 2.5 gal jug. Of coarse 1400 miles in two days out of the box is not how we will normally use the truck. I kind of think the quart of Wally World 2 cycle oil I put in the 2001.5 at each fill up will be a wash with adding DEF to the new truck.
Biggest problem so far is trying to hold it down to speed limits, "Cherry" as we named her has really long legs. She does speak to you nicely about speeding. Chris - Me_AgainExplorer III

Is there any truth to the rumor that GM and Ford have been working on a HD 10-Speed trans? I expected the new 2017 Ford Superduty to have the 10 speed but it won't. Its the same 6 speed they already have.
DEF is 32% ammonia and water.
Ford already has a robust tranny. It is GM that needs a better tranny to keep in the HP and torque race. Chris - Nautique200ExplorerOops, my mistake. I knew that just said it wrong. Thanks for the correction.

DEF is not ammonia. It's urea. Big difference. - Mickey_DExplorerMy 2014 Ram uses a 2.5 gallon jug about every 3K miles. Towing heavy seems to drop it to about 750 mpg on the DEF, not bad enough to worry about but you do notice the increase. The only really bad thing that I can say about the DEF is I got a little on my shoe and it made it smell like cat pee for a week even after sitting out in the sun for a couple of days.
