Nothing wrong with the 68RFE, I think it was/is a much maligned transmission....I never had a problem with it, (though, I only had one from June of 2010 thru May of 2013 and I'll get ragged on not having a truck long enough to actually see anything happen to it.:))
BUT, I purchased the Cummins/Aisin combo in my sig. because this truck is going to be my retirement truck and, Good Lord willing, in about 17 months, we'll start towing around this beautiful country of ours...I wanted the new truck with the new frame, new front and rear suspension and a medium duty diesel strapped to a medium duty tranny...Was more curious than anything else....You get the extra HP & TQ with the Aisin & the Cummins, thus the reason I got it....I have a little over 27,500 miles on it, and it'll be 2 yrs old May 9th. Only issue I've had was to replace the windshield washer motor...It's my daily driver and it's been one great truck thus far.
original topic was non-DEF trucks vs Newer DEF trucks....I've owned a 2010 and 2012, both DRW/ automatic, long bed, crew cab, 4X4 trucks, one a Laramie, one a Longhorn, and now the 13'.....The 13' get's better mpg, towing or empty than the other 2 trucks, that's one benefit I see from the DEF, other is regens aren't as long and don't suck up as much fuel...
