A/C Problem

Having an issue with our AC. Always at the beginning of a trip the AC has taken a long time to come on, but then has been good for rest of trip. This time the AC was on for a few nights, but now is not working at all. I'm thinking it is a thermostat issue, but not really sure. It just doesn't seem to be getting the signal to turn on. I don't know why it always takes so long on the first night after we have started our travels, but has seemed to work after that. Not now. Ideas?

Thanks Caveman!! That's helpful!!

This is my point SoundGuy. I do not know what the "pertinent" information is that you need in order to provide help. Sure it seems obvious to you, you have the answers. When I know the answers it would be obvious to me too, but then I wouldn't be asking a question.

For me it is not obvious, which is why I asked, and why anyone on this forum asks anything.

Of course my comments are "constructive". 🙂 As long as these types of posts continue - i.e. my "xxxx" is broken, what's wrong with it?" - without providing any pertinent details about the device we're discussing the more we'll all continue to simply guess at the the OP may be talking about. The simple solution is for the OP, whomever he or she may be, to provide this pertinent technical information in their post. Seems "obvious" to me and if the repair involves replacement parts you can bet the OP will have to provide this information anyway in order to get the right part. My second reply to the OP was simply to explain this, not to "belittle" anyone. :R

Soundguy, I appreciate you, and your experience and the help you provide at times. However, I must let you know that the common sense you hope we all have is not the case. Your expertise is actually just that, experience born of actual ability and wisdom from practice.

I am just beginning. I am not an engineer, and do not think in the way you think. So my common sense and yours are different. If I were to throw out a financial statement much that I would think is common sense would not be so for many who go numb looking at spreadsheets.

Your list of what i needed to provide was actually quite helpful. I didn't know to provide that. I haven't seen it to be helpful in responses yet, but who knows maybe it is.

The problem I see with this is that it is an intermittent electrical problem. Those are always difficult to figure out. I am looking for the wisdom born from experience on this board, and that wisdom has saved me lots of time in figuring things out.

Never ceases to amaze why one would post, asking for technical assistance and not provide pertinent information, in this case make / model / product# of the A/C unit, whether it's direct blow or ducted, make / model of any thermostat, and whether it also controls a furnace. :R

Sorry, but wouldn't it just be common sense to provide some details about the equipment you're asking about, not just saying "Having an issue with our AC. Ideas?" :h That's no different than saying "my truck won't start, what's wrong with it?" Without knowing exactly what equipment you're talking about the best anyone could do, even those with "so much knowledge", is offer a WAG. I'm just guessing but, it sounds like your wall thermostat may be going bad. (Though it is funny that it runs the furnace good and not the AC ) They are easy to change and you do not have to purchase another Coleman thermostat. Any one from a hardware store will work just fine.

They are also inexpensive.

Info requested:

Make: Coleman-Mach (thermostat is same)
4800 Series
Model #48203A866
Serial #:091007762

A/C is both ducted and direct blow (heat is ducted through different ductwork though)
Thermostat does also control the furnace - no problems with furnace running however.

A/C did kick on thursday night, and worked well through the day friday and friday night. We made sure not to turn thermostat off, just moved the temp gauge to high temp to turn it off.

Any other info needed?? I do appreciate the help provided on these forums!!

Ah, must be nice having so much knowledge, but struggling with patience makes it hard to impart such knowledge to those of us without such knowledge.

Your list is a good one, thanks! Just what I was looking for from those in the know!! Now i know what to look for to seek the help I need. Love these forums, could do without the condescending comments, though.

Just got back to my trailer last night. DW is staying in it while starting new job. I'm back and forth while I finish my job, and work on selling our home. So I'm not on here constantly as some are.

Does the fan run and not the compressor or do both not power on? Could be several things, including the t-stat or start capacitor. Need more info.
