air bags

hi out there - we just took our trailer in for some warranty issues, when i realize that i do have lightness in the front end when towing. the service manager said that i may need suspension air bags? what are these and do they really work? i feels like the front end is floating. i'm having a friction sway bar installed, will that help?
thanks
  • What you describe is indicative of not enough weight transfer with your current hitch. Air bags will only level the truck after the hitch has been properly adjusted. You need to have around 13% tongue tongue weight ( that's 13% of the trailers actual ready to travel weight. Then you need to make sure your WD bars are sized accordingly.
  • Put on the airbags, and level the TV, and then. You will stil have the same problem you have now. Forget the bags, and evidently forget your service manager. He is not qualified for his job.

No one that knows anything about towing a TT, would suggest air bags to return steering control to the steering axles.

The friction sway bar will help with trailer sway, but the front-end lightness sounds like your WDH is not returning enough weight to your front axle. Perhaps the WDH tension bars are under-sized? Or the WDH is not properly adjusted? Be sure the WDH reduces the TV's front end lift by 50-100%. Perhaps just increase the WDH tension so the lift is 100% eliminated?

Once you are *SURE* that the WDH is properly sized and adjusted, you may still not be happy with your tow vehicle's handling. It may not be "crisp" enough, "squirmy", or there may be a "floating" sensation. This means the vehicle's suspension/tires need an upgrade. My F150 has a very soft suspension IMHO, so I added a rear suspension upgrade, heavy duty shocks and swapped the P-metric tires for LT tires. This is where rear air bags may help.

But after any suspension upgrade/adjustment, you will always need to re-adjust your WDH so that front end lift is reduced by 50-100%.
