another caulk question

This is what the "caulk" if you will looks like. I'm not sure that it's caulk, as it seems to be more like a tape they apply which squeezed out. Should I gently trim this off with a knife and then apply a bead of RV rated caulk everywhere, or is this just extra stuff I can ignore?

  • dang, how do I get the pics to post? I did the Tiny Pic thing, but don't see them.
  • Use a plastic scraper and scrape it off flush. Yes it will squeeze out over time.
  • It's putty, not caulk. Agree with Donn above, just scrape it off - it isn't doing anything now.
  • It appears to be butyl tape. It is normal for it to squeeze out like that. I redid my TC windows 12 years ago, and it still oozes out. A little less every year. I just trim it with a plastic knife, spoon handle or something similar.

  • Yup, that's putty alright. Every RV has it. It does not harden and as things move, it will ooze out. Scrape it off because it will attract dirt and cause those black streaks on the sides of the camper.
  • If the existing caulk is oozing out, there is no reason to re caulk. Unfortunately, many if not most RV manufactures put silicon caulk over all edges, including windows. Over time it looks awful. I see no purpose other than possibly cover any mistakes they may have made in caulking, serve to reduce the dirt that sticks to regular caulk, or possibly because they think it looks better. It is difficult to remove, and usually falls off in sections as the RV ages. It took me several years to get it all off of my 1988 Bigfoot.
  • Thanks for posting this question. My Lance has the same thing going on and I was wondering if that was ok. I recently discovered plastic razor blades that I was planning to use to clean that up. They are handy things to have around.
