I don't understand how "these two numbers simply don't jive". 2049 pounds of payload is more than enough to handle many types of trailers that way 14,500 pounds or even more.
Don't get stuck into thinking that all tow ratings are related to FW RVs. Many types of trailer including boat, equipment, and livestock, often have tongue weights a much smaller percentage of the total weight than FW RV does.

What? I'm not sure I understand your question. Your tires are rated for a total of 15,000 lbs. I'm guessing your GVWR is substantially less than 15,000 lbs. Are you asking why your GVWR is less than the 15,000 tire weight rating?

There are many factors to achieving your GVWR, to include tires, brakes, engine, transmission, frame, suspension, rear axle, cooling system, etc.

Just because one of the factors (tires) has plenty of room to spare doesn't mean that ALL of the factors have that much room to spare

Either that or I am completely misunderstanding your question...

The payload is the GVWR minus the weight of your truck. Has nothing to do with the tires on your truck.

If you had selected a F-350 SRW, it would have about the same tires and axle ratings. However the GVWR is 1,500 pounds higher on the F-350 SRW than the F-250 SRW. Simply put, you have the wrong truck for a 1 ton load, such as a fifth wheel, and be able to carry passengers as well.

You can tow most any travel trailer, with it's 10% - 15% hitch weight rating. Even a 12,000 pound travel trailer with a 1,500 pound hitch will still leave you 500 - 600 pounds of weight capacity for the weight of the hitch and passengers.

With a fifth wheel, the hitch alone comes in a 150 pound crate. The hitch pin weight when full of water might come in around 2,000 pounds, and then you expect to carry more than the driver, so add that weight.

Check the curb weight of your truck. It might be lighter than you expected, and subtract that from your 10,000 GVWR. This will tell you how many pounds of passengers and hitch weight you can actually carry.

Just don't decide to also install a extra large fuel tank and carry 500 pounds of firewood too! If you are over the GVWR by say 200 pounds, it is not the end of the world.

If you are confusing the 3,750 pound tire weight rating with the ability of the truck to tow 14,000 pounds, remember that most of the trailer weight will be on it's two skinny axles, and china bomb tires. So you only need to worry about the weight on the truck's tires, and axles, and the brakes can handle.

Are you sure the weight rating on the tire says 3750? My E rated Michelins are rated for 3042 single and 2778 per tire dual wheel.

There's more to it than tire capacity when they determined the GVWR of your truck... Suspension, brakes, drive train etc.

The 2010 2500HD Duramax I recently sold had a GVWR of 9200 lbs and empty weight of around 7200 which left me with a 2000 lb payload for hitch, fuel, cargo and pin weight.

The 5er I had at the time had a loaded weight of about 13,000... With the hitch, fuel, passengers and pin weight the truck alone scaled @ 10,500 lbs... Under by the towing capacity but I was over the GVWR of the truck by 1,300 lbs.

Yes the truck could pull a 14,500 lb trailer but it will be limited by the pin weight in the bed of the truck that will put it over it's GVWR.

I'm thinking the O.P. got that one right- tire payload is given as so many pounds at a specific PSI. One rarely sees mfr tire specs on a rig that exactly "match" a given tire's full capacity. My guess is that Ford spec'd a lower PSI for the OEM tires at least partly for comfort-of-ride purposes. This likely because most pickups spend 90% of their time as passenger vehicles; and if tires that size are inflated-to-the-max the truck would ride like a buckboard when not under a "work" load.

You have an F150 so you know you can't tow anything but a utility trailer :B

Remember that magical mfg. tow rating is based on max tow rating of a base model with a 150# driver and 20# of cargo.

That 2049# payload rating is based on the trucks trim level (options/engine--tranny, bed length, curb weight, gvwr etc.) and is also a published number

Actual Payload will be even lower ...........passengers, any stuff inside truck cab, anything in bed/on bumper (hitches) stuff carried in bed etc.
All of that is subtracted from available payload to end up with real actual payload.

SO mfg.s use marketing hype to claim they are the biggest, baddest, best ------surprise surprise surprise

Regarding the "wrong truck", you may be right, however...

In talking with my mechanic just this morning, he was putting on new rear brakes, he has the same truck, year, etc but his is the SRW 350. He said the only real difference in the 250 and 350 (srw) is the 350 has slightly larger brakes and one more rear spring. So with that, it would seem adding that spring pack would get me right back into the right territory.

His feeling was going airbags.

Wouldn't that then make this the "right truck" for a good size 5th?
