Bunk Room Modification

Just wondering if anyone has taken a "bunk room" on a travel trailer and made it a "utility room?" Just seems like a way to get more storage space into a TT as well as providing an area for a washer dryer.
  • Main concern would be the weight of the washer and dryer. There are times it might be nice, but we don't take that many extended trips and the laundry facilities at the CG are sufficient for a couple of loads. Resale....it might be just the thing to attract a buyer, but OTOH....... Personal opinion is that you can pay for a lot of loads at the laundry room for the cost alone of the washer and dryer...then the installation.
  • Since your bunk room is probably at the rear of the trailer weight added there will reduce your tongue weight (as well as contributing to the polar moment of inertia). Not a good thing. To be aware of the impact of your modifications I would suggest weighing everything you remove and add on a bathroom scale to be sure you're not adversely impacting the trailer's weight distribution.
  • This has been on my mind too. I've seen some floor plans I really like that have bunkrooms that would be useless to me as an empty nester but would work great for a washer/drier and maybe a desk/counter.
  • Now wondering who has added a washer/dryer to a travel trailor and what kind of problems they have had?
  • Moat of the time our bunkroom is a storage room. It has also been a TV room so I can watch one show while my husband watches another. When we had a cat, it had a bunk set up with a litter box, a bed and food tray for the cat. And even, it has been sleeping area for children.
Extra sheets that almost match the walls hangs from the top bunks to hide all of the stuff.
One woman I talked to had a rod installed the length of the bottom bunk to make a large closet.
  • Be mindful of how you modify...if you think you'll be trading it in or selling in a few years, then think about how to make it back into a bunk room so you can get top dollar for it. If not, then it doesn't matter. Agree with bear, RVs are personal, make it the way you like it.
  • Have seen and read about several modifications to bunk area....
-Replaced bunks with a desk setup
-Setup bunks to hold pet carriers for show dogs
-Use storage containers stacked and secured in the bunks for craft supplies.
-Another RV'er kept his inventory of products he sold at fairs & flea markets in the bunks.
So the answer is yes....make the RV fit your needs.
