Chevy 2500HD 6.2?

Ran into a Chevy dealer and was informed that there is a strong probability that the 6.2 with 8 speeds will be offered soon in the 2017 2500 series? I know this topic has been beaten to death before, I don't know if anybody heard the same, he could have been talking to get me excited in trading mine in..I would think that the 6.0 will come with the 8 speed trans in the future since the 5.3 performed great with it up the IkE. Anyway regardless mines still good with only 70k on it. Is this a GM hype to draw interest ? I thought the aluminum block was not in the forecast to be installed due the the demands placed upon HD trucks...

Personally I do not like the many speed transmissions. My daughter had a Jeep Grand Cherokee she only kept for a 8 months. All it did was constantly try to find a gear. Deviations in the road, the gas peddle it just was terrible on hesitation because it was always shifting trying to find a gear.

If I ever considered to trade mine, I would go with a standard or one with torque and few gears verses a low torque engine with to many gears that are always on the hunt.

Did your daughter have a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee? The 9 speed in the Cherokee has been very troublesome.

I have yet to hear a complaint about the 8 + speed tranny's in the other vehicles. I personally have driven many in the rental fleet 200/300's and have been very impressed. Heard the same positive comments regarding the 8 speed in the RAMs.

To the OP's question, I would not be surprised if GM either updated the 6.0 or added an option of the 6.2. While the 6.0 still performs pretty well in the 2500's, it is at a pretty big disadvantage to what RAM and Ford offer.

Grand. It was awful. You would give it same gas on a minimal hill and it would hang then down shift 3 - 4 gears. Then on top of the hill hang and go back to 8th I believe it was. Never could find just one gear. It was a 2014 6 cylinder model.
  • I have been hearing that a 6.2 is in the works. I cant point to any GM sourced info but I still believe that they will bring this motor out in the HD line. It will have to be iron or some type of infused graphite block perhaps. The 6.0 as great as it is will need cylinder deactivation at some point (even though it has marginal value in a HD pickup). If you look at the numbers the 6.0 lags, regardless of how well it actually performs, they are losing HD gas customers that exclude the 6.0 simply off the spec sheet. So they need to offer something more, and the 6.0 has nothing left to give. The rumors are too many to not have some validity to them.
  • Yeah I'm good with the 6.0, it's hard to replace an engine that has proven itself over time. I searched some more and could not locate Info stating that the 6.2 was a replacement for the 6.0. I think he was confused cause it been successful in the 1500 line. Anyway I don't have any desire to replace mine.....thanks for the replies.

    This ^^^^.

The LS alloy bock does not make a HD situation. Aluminum does not make for a stable block material unless you use a lot of it. And GM will never use a lot of it. Hell, in the 90's GM thought pig iron was gold. Just look at the 6.5 blocks and heads. :R

  • My dealer told me the same thing last year and I posted it here, only to be called a few names.... :) He said that the district rep told him they were going to build the 6.2 with a cast iron block and it would be even more powerful than mine. So yes, I can believe it is coming to the GM HD truck sooner than later, to counter Ford and Ram.
  • 2017 vincard info suggests GM will have the same gas engine (L96 and LC8) in 2017 HD's. Not to say that the 6.2L won't be an option, as anything is possible.

The 6.0L is a tried and true motor and on paper doesn't impress but in several real world tests, has performed favorably compared to its competitors.
