I used to tow my Pioneer trailer with my Toyota double cab with a 3.4 V-6. The reason we purchased the small Pioneer trailer is, I "thought" that it was the most weight I could tow with the Toyota. It turned out it was a bit too heavy for long trips.
That brings me to the 2006 Duramax that we purchased last month. It is the one equipped with the new more powerful, quieter engine with six speed transmission. It is indeed big, bad, powerful and expensive. Around town I get 14.5 / 14.8 miles per gallon and freeway driveling 17.5 to 19 MPG. However, this is traveling at the speed limit and being light footed. How much longer I will be able to drive like that is debatable.
Our primary decision to buy the Duramax was so that we did not have to consider our tow vehicle during the next several (future) travel trailer upgrades. This truck will pull pretty much anything made.
Also, with this truck my wife can easily tow our trailer and she is not even a very good diver. Heck, I won't sleep wile she’s driving our minivan down the freeway. The tonnage (3/4 ton) of the truck delivers the handling side of the equation while the diesel power allows her to simply put it in cruse control while driving over the mountains.
All said and done, it was a good choice for us.
