Distance traveled in a day

I know this is dependent on the individuals but I was curious as to what is considered a good day’s travel with a TT?

Our only experience was from Indiana to the Ozarks in a 24 ft. TT we rented to see if we liked it. We traveled mostly on the Interstates.

We discovered that we like to travel, then stop for a day or so to see the sights, then move on to the next point of interest. We stopped at three campgrounds in 10 days to see the sights but we were never more than 8 hours from home, so the last day was not that much of a push.

Now we wish to go out west and I have been told that places are rather spread out so I wondered what kind of distances we should expect to travel each day?

Oh yes, it is just a grandpa, grandma and grand dog.:)

We plan to average about 300 miles per day on our trip to the west coast and back. Fortunately we're newly retired, so don't have a return date set in stone.

You will find that when towing, if you travel at 60-65mph, you will average 50mph for the day, including fuel and rest stops. This translates into around 300-350 miles per day if you drive for 6 hours which is just about our max.

We are retired and usually start about 9:00am at the latest and stop about 3:00pm. This gets us into campgrounds early enough to get a site without the need for reservations and still have plenty of time to relax a bit and look around before the next days drive.

We have been doing exactly the same thing and some of our trips are several thousand miles and several months and for those we like to have a day of rest about every 3 days of traveling with 4 days on the road the max before stopping for at least a day.

This got me to thinking back to our last 3000 mile, 3 week trip out west. First and last day were 600 miles. This was all of Nebraska and part of Iowa. Days in between were any where from 0 to 300 each. Don't stress over miles. Get where your are going and enjoy the ride.

In our younger days, about 8 hours or so was max - even with DH and his size 14 foot. Never thought I'd live to see the day he didn't fret over hurry, hurry, hurry. Yea, we've arrived. He's much happier towing about 55 - 60 or so and has mentioned many times that he'd never seen something we've passed a dozen times....well, no!, not at 80 mph! Now that I've started towing, he's really enjoying the trip. I enjoy towing and don't mind it at all....backing - not quite perfected yet. We've always thought that trying to cram too many miles into one day makes you worn to a frazzle before you ever get there. And daytime driving has always been our preference.

I have done over 500 miles in a day, two days in a row but I was pretty tired afterward. I have some back issues so I have to get out every 100 miles to walk around, eat lunch, and fuel up. I find I average just about 50 miles per hour so 500 miles is ten hours of driving. Getting too old for much more than that.

We drive until we see something or someplace we'd like to explore, and stay as long as we're interested. Each place is different and may or may not capture our attention. You don't know until you get there.

I think it rather destroys the spontaneous enjoyment of travel to set a relatively fixed amount of driving time.

If you get 300 miles consider it a pretty good day and you will be feeling fine. Push to 400 and it stops being much fun. Just my 2 cents. :C

I agree on this one..
As I have gotten older the ride seems to be harder. I get stiff and can barely get out og the truck to walk after 300 miles. So we stop around 150 relax and walk the puppies still can hard to walk. Plus I usually have to GO.
I will stop half way on a 225 mile trip too. Buts that because we are now traveling with our kids and grandchild(they have their own camper) and he doesnt like that car seat much more than 1.5 hours unless he's sleeping.

We usually make between 250 & 400 miles per day , depending on the time we roll out. My bride does NOT do early very well. If we are going to do over 250 , I try to leave before 08:00. If we don't make that time it's a shorter mileage day. Since I'm retired and doing all the driving , I don't care about miles behind me. That is , MOST of the time. Longest I've pushed it since I retired is 760 mi. in one day. Needless to say at 73 yrs of age I won't be doing that again. In my younger days I would leave Houston TX. and drive straight through to Durango CO. about 1100 miles.

This is pretty individual but for us, 275 to 400 miles is about right. But the 400 is best done in summer when days are longer. 275 is enough if we start late and plan a few stops. For me the criteria are: When will we get started(never before 8 AM), how far are the campgrounds that we tentatively plan to use, can I be there by 4 to 5 PM, will the route be 4-lane or very hilly and winding, etc. We try to avoid real long days behind the wheel and never arrive after dark to an unfamiliar campground.

In the 1.5 years we have been camping in a trailer, our furthest is about 5 hours with our, almost two year old, daughter. However, this summer we are planning the 1200 mile trip to Disney World. Still trying to figure out how to break that one up 🙂

If you're comfortable with it and it fits your needs and desires, any distance you CAN travel is a "good days travel". It should have absolutely NOTHING to do with what anyone ELSE feels is appropriate. My own average is between 200 and 400 miles a day and my maximum ever traveled is 1,300 miles (West Yellowstone to Topeka Kansas) but I had to reach towing speeds of well over 80 MPH to get home for an emergency. Wouldn't normally recommend this at all but it fit my needs at the time.

We start our fulltiming June 30th of this year. We have told ourselves that 300 miles will be the max. per day...as we want to see as much as we can and relax. When we leave in June we are heading to see kids in Montana, which is normally a 10 hr drive by car. The kids are excited we are coming. But when we explained to them that we could not say what day we would arrive they were puzzled. As we told them it will take us most likely at least 2 weeks to get there.

Big difference in motivation to get somewhere between retired folks and working folks. Having only 2 weeks a year to travel puts the pressure on to drive a little further than you'd really like (or stay near home).

This summer, we have a long trip that will include the first three days at 550/day. Don't want to, but will.

Figure you will average 55 mph with stops etc. From there just figure how long you want to drive. When I went out west a few years ago, some days I drove 12 hours. It's up to you and where you want to go and how long you want to take to get there. To each his own.
