Electrical issue?

Have a 2000 Dutchmen 26bh travel trailer, everything on the power converter works with the exception of the 3 accessory circuits...Do I HAVE to have a battery up front for these to work??? I know one circuit is for the battery and water monitor, the other is the radio and the other escapes me at the moment...Thanks..
  • You don’t have a problem… that is how it was setup… and yes you need a battery installed for those circuits to work because they draw power from the battery and not the converter as delivered…
  • Many converters of that era had 2 types of outputs: filtered and non filtered. The filtered ones went to the electronics: radio, TV booster, etc. The non filtered to everything else. The battery was used as a way of filtering some of the AC ripple from the converter output. I don't know if those outputs would work or not without the battery but it would seem likely they wouldn't.
Also, it's probably not recommended to run the system without the converter since it was dependent on the battery for filtering and to a certain extent voltage regulation.

And, off course, their is the break-away brakes issue which make the battery mandatory for towing the trailer on a public road.
I hope calamus instals a battery in case his trailer ever comes unhitched. Otherwise he'll need a really long cord to the truck for it to stop.

    This made me laugh. Sorry.

I am a little confused by your question (I often am).

But, IF you are towing this trailer you certainly do need a battery so that your emergency break-away system will work...

Both of our campers will run all the 12volt systems with out a battery. That being said not all of them do, check all fuses. good luck

Are you sure, very unusual...I'd double check this (break-away function). If so, then I learned something....

Question: how can the truck's battery supply power to the trailer brakes IF the trailer has "broken away" from the truck...(disconnected pig tail) is is free wheeling down the road??
It must rely on the trailer battery to stop a run away trailer.

X2 No battery, no emergency brakes once unplugged from TV

No, power for the brakes on the trailer in a break-away situation is delivered by a battery on the trailer, not the truck.

  • Check your 12v TV outlet. It probably is off too. The radio and tv often use the battery as a sort of current filter to reduce 12v "noise" in the line.
  • So what's working, and what's not? Lights? Furnace? Radio? Water pump?
