Ford 6.7l Fuel Filter Change-Do You Do It Yourself?

My neighbor does his. I've watched, it's pretty easy, just very messy. My first one will be due at the next oil change and I haven't decided what I'm doing with it yet.

But, and this will save you some money. Do not use a wrench on the chassis filter under the drivers seat. Get a big enough strap wrench to fit around the filter and use that to remove and re-install the housing. Using a wrench will wring the bottom of that housing off.

BTW it isn't that messy if you open the drain on the chassis filter and give it 30 mins or so to drain the fuel.

If you are getting the oil changed at someplace that doesn't work on diesels make sure they are using the correct oil.

I plan on doing mine myself I do my oil changes and tire rotations I will not pay $150 for an oil change it cost me about $60 I expect the same savings on the fuel filter change. I am sure there will be some spillage.

My manual states the fuel filter replacement should be done every 22,500 miles. For me that is about every two years. So I just let the dealer do it at an oil change. If I put that many miles per year, I MIGHT consider doing it myself.

My experience when towing back from Az to Wa st in march of 05 driving a new 05 with 3625 miles and the fuel filter made the truck go into limp mode. after the tow to Blythe Ca and the miss diagnose on what the problem was it was at that time I knew I would get what ever was needed and be able to change the fuel filter if needed on the road and have replaced it each summer in my garage.

My thinking is replace a fuel filter once a year and not the miles driven.

Old habits hard to break I guess. Oil/filter every 5k miles and fuel every 15k. Oil is cheap insurance. I've had good luck w/ pricing of MC filters from "Diesel filters online".

Oh, may want to get a step stool to gain access to top filter and to put oil in when needed. I'm a short lil fart at 5'7" and can't do it w/o it.

very simple to change the 2 filters, make certain to cycle your key for 30 seconds 6 times to prime the system after.

on my previous 2011 6.7 I did the filters every 10k miles, I buy the motorcraft filters online for $48.

Do it myself, every other oil change.

I recommend doing it your self only if you don't mind smelling like diesel (I wish they made a diesel cologne), don't mind making a little mess and ability to read and follow youtube directions are a plus.

I have a 05 Ram cummins that I bought used.Took it to the dealer for service and they charged me $100 for filter change PLUS filter cost. I watched a Utube video where the guy did it in 5 minutes INCLUDING doing the video.When I complained to the dealer they chopped $25 off price. Now I do my own. Super easy and filter cost is under $20.
