My experience with passport america is that is may not be worth it. Stopped at 5 last year. Three had decided not to honor the PA rate due to the solar eclipse. One that was full offered an overflow space for $110 per night. Yes, I understand that many advertise no PA rate at certain times of there season, this time was not listed. We spent the night at Walmart in the next large town. I've had the problem that there, many times, isn't a PA campground near me when I want to stop. I did stay at 2 PAs last year, both good places, one was exceptionally nice to stay at, the other was nice but right next to an interstate with plenty of traffic. Still, worked for us.

We don't mind staying at Walmarts if they allow, but they are sometimes noisy. There are many businesses that welcome you if you are considerate. We stayed at a Burger King in Minnesota that had a dump station. Woke the next morning with a pig hauler parked next to us, luckily the wind was blowing away from us and not at the store, as the odor was intense and we wouldn't have been able to eat our sausage biscuit.

Different strokes for different campers . We are travelers and stay in campgrounds when we have no other choice . Wal-Marts , hospital parking lots , police stations . You did not state your interests , Disney at $100 per day or state parks at $12 per day . Do ya like long drives down the Interstate highways or casual cruisin on back roads . We are all different , myself I do not want to pay for pool and golf course , you will decide for yourself . Try it as it fits ya ! Passport America is always my first choice . Mail , are you going to have a home base ? Remember what ya get on here is some one else opinion and may bear no relation to what you enjoy !

Out of state fishing is expensive if you're moving state to state. MT is horrendous.
Idk a cheap way around that for a lot of states in the same year unless maybe you qualify for the old folks licenses.

If you are 62 or over, get Multi agency senior pass.
It cost $10 for life and gives you free entrance to Federal and State parks, as well as 50% off on campgrounds run by Corps of Engineers or other government agency.
Should be able to get it at any park entrance.
That pass saved me close to $1000 last year.
Use family or friends for DL and registration and cancel all other mail.
For my front-mounted Honda, I made custom platform where potential thief would have to figure out how to unbolt 4 legs, even if he would have metric sockets, where hitch pin is lockable.
Be careful with overnight at Walmarts as in Georgia the city send tow truck, that put clubs on wheels at 4 AM. Tow truck driver clubbed semis park there and let us leave on warning.
I never felt need for a gun in my life and I think I will start learn fishing on my retirement.

We have a campground membership that costs about $400/yr plus a $1-10/night charge. This includes a membership to a campground organization with about 10 locations plus access to a larger exchange program. We break even or are ahead of staying in public or private campgrounds each year and I still work full time.

Some states have better reciprocity than others for weapons permits and some states have draconian restrictions regardless of residency. Spend your money where your interests align with the political agenda rather funding areas that do not.

SD appears to be my favorite if I go full time. I would like hear from others why another state was selected and its advantages.

If there is an area where I would not feel comfortable with no lighting, it would be an area I would avoid. If there is a large transient population or frequent sirens in the background (hospitals excluded), you may want to move on. I have no problem boon docking in residential, commercial, industrial or remote areas, but I will never do so where my intuition tingles or where I am not welcome.

I have an external alarm and lighting that can be set. These can be turned on if there is someone or a noise outside. I will make plenty noise or light to attract help before being confrontational and I have communication and secure shelter options available. You should have multiple levels of protocols you are willing engage to protect life and property.
