Sorry for the delay in replying as we were gone about all day today and just got home about an hour ago.
Today's post from you explains why you have so much snow on your TC but if you have 24" in your yard, it's a drifted area as we were in Allendale on M-45 and N.Cedar by the gravel pits area this afternoon which is close to you and they only had 6" to 8" max on the ground at around 3PM. Yes, it's so true that because our winds come over Lake Michigan from the westerly direction, the east side of about any structure or a dense woods, there will be much deeper snow deposits due to blowing, drifting, or dumping snow. However, that's not a true measure of how much snow is on the ground as an average.
Yesterday we were gone most of the day because we were in downtown GH in the stores and a restaurant and there's not a bit of snow on the street or the sidewalks there. Ha ha, the streets and sidewalk downtown are heated as you know. Of course, we had to stop at Meijer like about everyone else does but not until about 8:30pm. Meijer was jammed full all day as our daughter went there around 2PM and they had to park way out by the service drive. She'd called and told us to stay away until at night som we did but what a surprise! The very first time since 1958 I've seen Meijer shelves less than half full with many shelves totally bare. The manager "Jim" said the store was full of people since about 8 in the morning with people stocking up because of the forecasts. He said he called in all the help he could get but they couldn't even keep up! Took us nearly an hour to check out!
When we got home and I read your first post last night about having so much snow, I took a yard stick out and checked the snow depth in 4 places on level ground and the depth varied from 3-3/4" to 4-1/4". 2 checks in the front and 2 in the back. One on a concrete never cleared walkway and 3 in the grass areas down to the dirt. 4" is a long way from 24".
Went out again after the snow we had today when we got home and it's now as of about 5:30pm 5" to 5-1/2" in the same places. Drove thru downtown and took Harbor drive passed the State Park on the way back home today and there's about the same snow depth we have on our land. Downtown has only wet streets like it had rained but the sidewalks were totally dry.
That's why your numbers you posted last night didn't make sense. Guess you might live in a magical snowfall little localized area! Then again, most of the snow this winter has been well south or southeast of us as is the bitter cold temps. Thank you Lake Michigan!
It's 21.6 F here at our home at 7;19pm and cold as H3ll on the other side of Lake Michigan as usual!
