How to check Nissan Armada towing capacity?

You must look in the armada's owner's manual. Maybe you can find one online.

They show the SL platinum 4WD with a 9000# tow capacity and a 900# tongue weight.

Page 9-21 of the owner's manual says 6,500# without the tow package and 9,100# with the tow package and two wheel drive, 9,000# with the tow package and four wheel drive. Maximum tongue weight is 10% of its respective tow rating.

If you are purchasing a used Armada, you should get the VIN and ask a Nissan dealer if it has the tow package.

I'd be more concerned with the GVWR, payload and axle ratings of the Armada, not just how much trailer it can pull.

Looking at Aramadas online, I found the stickers for a 2011.

GVWR: 7150
RAWR: 4299
FAWR: 3399
Payload: 1543

Like most/all 1/2 ton SUVs, one of these numbers is likely to be exceeded before the overall trailer weight. Compare these numbers to your Expy, and go from there.

Exactly.

Forget the "towing capacity" as it is just a mfg'ers advertising gimmick for sales. When towing a TT or 5'er, payload capacity will probably be the first rating you will exceed.....loooooong before you even come close to the towing capacity.

Every 2007+ full sized SUV has a tongue weight limit of 800-1000 pounds. If payload of 1200-1600 doesn't get you first, then the receiver limit will when it comes to RVing. 900 pounds of TW means about 7k loaded TT, or under 6k dry. That makes the 8000-9600 pound tow ratings worthless for RVing. Stick to 6k dry, Choose the half ton SUV you like best. They all tow well now with 6+ gears of trans.

The reason I am interested in max tow rating is because I want to stay within 75% of rated capacity to provide power for mountains. My total load, including tongue weight, passengers, gear, etc is expected to be 12-1300. I don't want to tow 6K of weight with a 6500 lb. rated vehicle.

Define mountains - Rockies? or Appalachians?

No matter what you choose, it'll be a turd in the Rockies. Just last month I drove my rig through the Eisenhower tunnel and over Vail Pass on I-70 in Colorado. 2nd gear, 4000 RPM, 40 MPH was all we were doing on the last few hills. And that's an engine rated at 353 HP with a 3.73 rear and a 6-speed transmission. Total weight was 14,500 lbs.

In the Appalachians - you'll be fine with anything with a 6-speed transmission that can handle the weight.

Best advice on the thread.

fwiw, I had a Nissan Titan and it was a very capable 1/2 ton. You will run out of brakes and suspension long before you run out of power. Getting up the hills with the load and trailer you propose shouldn't be a problem.

I'm currently in a 3/4 ton but if I were looking at a 1/2 ton I'd take a hard look at the Armada/Titans. For some reason they are the red headed step child of the market segment and are likely the best value to be had.
