insurance coverage

USAA is being shotty with motorcycle and RV insurance. Whatever. I am deferred to progressive. We haven't had a single claim in the entirety of our driving experience. My wife and I are both 720+ credit score with zero claims in 20 years of driving. I am looking at some odd ball **** with this whole insurance. I am curious what you guys/gals are paying and what coverages you are leaning towards.

I wonder if its worth it to take minimums and go pay 150 to AAA for towing assistance. I dunno. Any advice is appreciated. Don't get me wrong, I am looking at 219 per year for basic coverage...but If I start including premium services these numbers double real quick like.
  • We switched both our vehicles and TT over to the "lizard" (GEICO), resulting in a significant saving over prior coverage with State Farm (32 years). GEICO extends the "automotive" coverage features to the TT when hitched to our truck, (liability, uninsured motorist, etc). The coverage separate from the vehicle coverage are: Personal belongings ($5000),Collision, Comprehensive, Medical Payments ($1000, Vacation Liability ($10000 IIRC), & Roadside Assistance. They offer a collision and comprehensive total loss replacement cost or purchase price rider. One provides coverage for the first five years of the policy, the other for the first eight years. I don't know if you can purchase both or can only purchase one of them. They do add significant cost to the policy, so I opted not to purchase either one at this time. Our cost per six month policy period is $204.60, which I don't consider bad since we store the trailer away from our home in storage facility.
  • Just start shopping. I now shop ins every year and go with the lowest. They have no loyalty to me for staying and i have no loyalty to them.

Well, FWIW, I have minimum liability on my truck and motorcycle and no insurance whatsoever on my TT, atv, snowmobiles, snowmobile trailer or utility trailer. IMO, insurance is a huge ripoff. Of course nothing I own is worth more than a few grand so take that with a grain of salt.

This may be a very unwise strategy on your part. First off, never buy insurance for anything you can afford to pay for yourself. Liability insurance, the insurance that pays some else for harm you cause to them, is actually a value. Suppose you cause an accident where someone is severely injured. You could be responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars. A court could force you to sell everything and then pay a portion of your salary until paid off, which could take a lifetime.

Now for insuring your own property. You may be very wise in not buying insurance to cover an item only worth several thousand dollars, especially if you could either live OK without it or easily buy another one from your income and resources.
