Is 80,000 miles on a used 2012 F-250 Diesel too much?

Ford diesel trucks had lots of problems up through the 2010 model year. After that they have been considerably better and on par with GM and Ram trucks.

Diesel engines are best when not used for short trips where they do not get a chance to warm up properly. A 3 year old truck with 80,000 miles was not subjected to the abuse of lots of short trips.

I would want to review ALL the maintenance records for the truck. Very important that oil filter changes were done at 7500 or shorter intervals and that the fuel filter was changed every 10,000 miles or less. Otherwise you have a truck with an engine that is going to need work sooner and injector repairs in particular will cost more than a complete rebuild of a gas engine.

As mentioned, get an oasis report. That will be from Ford and will show if it has been in for continuous repairs which none of those other reporting services can do.

If the oasis report is clean and the price is right, go for it.

Or 80k on the farm.

As long as it has not been used for a snow plow in Boston...

We were looking for a used low mileage 6.7 but the price difference was to little in what we found.We don't have enough miles to comment on reliability of our 6.7 but we sure are impressed by it.
No I wouldn't worry about 80,000 miles. Our 2000 7.3 had 78,000 on it and it has been a great truck. With 130,000 it is still in excellent condition and trouble free.

Thanks guys. The dealership gave me the Autocheck report on the truck. (similar to the carfax). One owner, no accidents, looks maintained.

New for the same truck and options would be over $15,000 more, so used it will be. I just wanted to make sure it had less than 100k on it. I drive about 20,000 miles per year so I wanted time to run it before the warranty expired.

The big question would be how much they want for it. That new being a diesel, if you are financing it would probably only cost you a few dollars more a month to have a brand new one.

It is used for some fairly heavy work. With higher miles like that, it was most likely alot of highway miles instead of getting beat up at construction sites or idling for days.. If you could get the service records, you could tell if it had been maintained.
