Is ABS roof on Coleman Bayside risky??

Looking to purchase a 99 Coleman Bayside. Did some internet reviews and found some reports of problems with the ABS roof. People complained of sagging, cracks, etc. I inspected this one and the roof looks very good. Luggage rack and A/C unit on roof do not appear to be cuasing any issues. I just dumped a camper because of water issues. I DO NOT need any more. Anyone with 99 Coleman's out there that have had ABS roof issues?

Thanks guys..
  • I had a 2000 Santa Fe, which we used for 7 years and then traded in. We never had any roof problems, but it was a 10 ft box, and without an AC. Yours is larger and has more on the roof.

When I got the santa fe, I joined an online community. Many people were complaining about it, and they were definitely still having problems in the 2000 model year. My next pup was a 2004 highwall, and it had a different roof, so somewhere between 2000-2003 they gave up on the ABS.

I am a big fan on Coleman/Fleetwood pups, and when we went to replace the 2004, we were unimpressed by any other brands (so we ended up with a trailmanor. We mourn the passing of the brand, and are discouraged by Somerset's ability to get the new ones to market.

That said, I would not risk buying that model, unless the price is very good.
  • I’d be wary of it unless you can confirm that Fleetword fixed the problem by 1999. My son has a 1998 and the top is trash. Cracks and massive delamination. We’ve been trying to find a fix for it, not an easy task. Though if the top is still good by now it may be OK. I guess you pay your money and take your chances.
  • It's a shame that they had problems with the roofs on these because, otherwise Fleetwood made a good camper. That being said, I've seen some that look like heck and some that look fine. Did this one spend most of its time parked inside? That may be one way to keep them nice. We had a 99 Coleman Cheyenne that we bought new and the roof on it was in good shape when we traded it in 2003. Check it over good, make sure there's no soft spots in the floor or wood. If it looks good and the price is right, go for it, I'd say. I really wanted to get another Coleman this year when we switched back to a PUP but the ones I looked at were too rough for my tastes and they were 2004-2005 models. On one, the ABS roof was just full of tiny cracks and also had some other water damage inside. Make sure you check all around the slide-out, too. A slide-out presents more seams to possibly leak. Good luck!
