The new TAVT tax is a one time only tax. After paying the tax all that you have to pay is the yearly tag fee of $20.00

When purchasing a new vehicle the tax is calculated and added to the cost of the vehicle. They do not add sales tax any longer to new purchases. Once the tax is paid on the tag fee is due each year on your birthday.

For new residents of Georgia that are registering vehicles. The tax is figured on the value of the vehicle (not what you paid for it) and multiplied by 7%. This value is your tax, 50% is due at the time of registering the vehicle and the remaining 50% is due within 12 months. After that only the tag fee is due each year.

I purchased my car before the TAVT tax went into effect so I pay a yearly tag tax that is the value times the millage rate set by my county.

The TAVT does not cover pull behind trailers, boats or campers so those would fall under the yearly tax bill of value X millage rate.

Is the tax bill a yearly thing or just when you originally register it? Oh, dear.

I about died when we moved a bit further south than GA and went to register 3 vehicles + get licenses. Left about $1000 lighter. So the first year they were registered in August and had to pay renewal in December.

Just found out that if one of the couple passes away and the Will was not done in this state, it's a major PITA to sell the house...nearly impossible. So, guess we have to pay an attorney in this state to redo the Wills we had done in TN. Suppose they're going to want all the I's dotted and the T's crossed just like DMV did. And bring every piece of paper you have re anything. UGH!

You can go to the specific counties and get the millage rates and the valuation. Mine in the county I live in is much lower than love2rvcamp. My TT which is a 2011 JayFlight 24RKS (don't remember the county value) has a tax bill of less than $150.

Thanks again for all the nice replies to my post. Sure gives me something to think about.Stepson is selling part of his business and has offered to buy us a condo if we will move over there. Not sure I can handle the humidity there and I really like the wide open space of Texas.
Will give it a lot of thought before we make the move.

That's why I retired to the mountains. The rise in metro area taxes, traffic congestion and crime made it undesirable for us.

Your property tax will be calculated and it is due around October or November I believe.

Covington (Newton Co.) and Madison (Morgan Co.) do not require emissions testing.

"Vehicle emissions testing is required annually in the 13 metro Atlanta counties in Georgia (Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale County) in order for motorists to complete their vehicle registration."

Tax system changed for new registrations in 2013. I have a '99 Jeep under old system and a '15 Jeep under new system. All pull behind trailers are subject to annual ad valorum tax (not affected by new tax law). I just paid $141 annual tax (plus $12 tag fee) for my 20 footer valued at $8k. Our rate here in Union County in $17.6 per $1000 value. Taxation value is 40% of actual value.

Madison and Covington are both nice and just far enough away. Not sure about emissions testing in those counties. I did not realize that the vehicle tax system had changed since we moved.
