I believe it's "Infra-Red" - IR
It is an old technology that has been greatly improved over the years.

An exterior IR light is important for those of us that get home later than expected in the pitch dark.
Early model IR lights would trigger if a moth flew across their field-of-view.

Newer models require a much larger infra-red energy mass size such as a human, a bear, a deer, etc.
We have IR lights stationed around our home which is somewhat isolated.
Neighbors can't see us - the IR lights let us know when the deer come at night to strip our garden.
And we've never had a burglar.

Your negative experience with IR lights is a bit pre-historic and well known to those familiar with the subject.
