new battery charger...please help!!!!

I just purchased a brand new battery... its rated for 100 RC... I also purchased new schumacer charger.. has 10 amp, 6 amp and 2 amp...charge and maintain.. which amp is best for this battery? battery brand new... charger is supposed to go into a maintain mode when finished.. but Im gonna unplug it and charge it once per month...thanks
  • I would assume that if you start it on the highest setting it will cycle through the lower settings based on the batteries state of charge. Most three stage chargers operate that way. I always operate on the premise that about 1/4 of the total amp hours is the ideal maximum charge rate.
  • At 10amps is will take a long time to recharge that battery. If you haven't used your new charger you might want to think about exchanging it for something like this or the Vector/Black and Decker 40amp.

  • i'm trying to understand why you bought a new charger for a new battery, when your 2011 Jayco has the converter to keep it charged.

are you not able to keep it at home and plugged in?
or do you store it away from home and need to pull the battery to keep it charged?
  • camper is at my house, but I don't keep it plugged in all the time. I have to plug it into a 10 guage cord and then into a 20 amp gfi..... I figured it was just easier to completely unplug the battery from the camper so that there is no draw on it and charge it with its own charger... plus im not really sure how long to keep it plugged into shore power for in order to charge it.. atleast with a charger($40.00)it will tell me when charged.. then before I go camping I will throw the charger back on the battery a day before we leave to fully charge it.. im still very new at this.. so maybe Im looking and doing this wrong? Its just easier to plug in a charger when needed then plugging in the camper. I do have a question, how do I knoew if my new 2013 Ram has a charging cord hooked up to the 7 pin tow?
  • Yes, what Bikendan said. The Jayco will charge the battery by itself as long as you have an outlet to plug the camper into. Slower than a good charger like a 40 amp, but if you aren't in a hurry, the camper keeps it charged when plugged in.

  • arghhhhh. maybe I wasted $40.00 on a charger then...I can probably take back to the store. I just figured that other then when im at a campground, im more likely to have the charger plugged in then the camper itself.. I thaught the camper would take days to charge it, oh well, im learning. does the charger in the camper overcharge though? or does it stop charging when battery is full?

Not all converters are created equal....If you have a fairly new converter it may have a 3 stage system that will go into float once charged. The older models, especially WFCO do not. It's pretty cheap to upgrade to a good 3 stage converter. Check out www.bestconverter.com if you want to go that route.

as has been said before, you have a nearly new trailer, that has the latest 3 stage converter, which works just like your battery charger.
leaving it plugged in at home, is not very different than having the pulled-out battery hooked to a separate battery charger.

just a lot less work of pulling it out and putting it back in.
  • keep your charger, i have the same and like it alot.
you will need this for the winter when you bring your battery indoors. charge it once a month when not in use. your charger will start on ten then drop to 2 to maintain when full.
    its not a bgig deal.
  • ditto,,keep da charger and keep it in da camper,,u will need it someday,,believe me..
