- hone_eagleExplorerAll good points Don and food for thought.
It is all about 'gaming' the CAFE numbers ,which engine is easier to manipulate?
Twin turbo small displacement or a na V10 given the same power? On paper Ecoboost engines make regulators look good (see see we are doing our job!) and deliver what the customer wants, big fleets are not concerned with MPG so much as cost per mile. So win win.
They all play the same game -play within the testers 'box' no wonder some do not get promised mileage .
The manufacturers may care but only to a point , they must work in the box.
Is Ford winning the 'game'?
for now because they had a head start. - Perrysburg_DodgExplorerV10 you have a very valid point, if they replace the V10 with a V8 5.0 EB that should not affect Fords CAFE ratings. As far as HD trucks go, as of now they are not included but 2020?? In 2016 the manufacturers will have to hit combined EPA of 34.1 MPG for cars, suvs and LD trucks.
The reason fuel mileage is in question is show below. No you are right, not everyone wants a diesel. But bottom line they are coming no matter what some people think. Diesels make better fuel mileage no matter the cost of the fuel. Bottom line the Gov does not care what a fuel costs, they care how much fuel a particular vehicle uses, period.

A V8 Ecoboost in a HD truck just does not make any sense. The V6 does not make very good fuel mileage UNLESS you tape an egg to the top of the go pedal and a block of wood under it to limit its travel! On boost it is a pig, off boost it's OK but noting to right home about!
So do any of you think Ford is going to build a V8 EB and trash their CAFE ratings? They have the highest CAFE ratings of all the Auto Makers don't they (or so they say)? The game changer is their 10 speed trans, with it they may be able to keep a V8 EB some what economical. But what is that going to do to the cost of their trucks. The Ram Ecodiesel costs the same as a F-150 EB but the Ram comes with the ZF 8HP70 the Ford runs a 6 speed. Add the cost of the 10 speed in to it and the Ford is going to be very pricy I think.
Not sure why you and others keep brining this back to fuel mileage? :@
I am talking about a V8 Ecoboost 5.0L for the Superduty trucks.
Not sure how much the heavier class matters to CAFE?
But really, could a V8 Ecoboost change the numbers much since it would replace the 6.2 V8...
For me, having the 5.0 as Ecoboost in Superduty is about towing power as good as diesel, no power loss in the mountains, and just an all round usefull truck that's "NOT a diesel"
Similar to, but way better than my old V10.. :B
Not everyone wants a diesel..:W
For guys buying a heavy duty truck to tow and carry, fuel economy is just something you live with. - nevadanickExplorerI think a 3.5 L V8 Ecoboost would be the ticket for the Superduty. I am not ready to give up a V8.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerOK over in the auto show thread a link was post talking about the Tundra and the 5.0 CTD. I was told the 5.0 CTD was not going in the Tundra by a Toyota rep at the show. Here is the LINK
If you read it you will find this! "Sources say Ford is working on a light duty diesel as well, planning for a 2018 arrival. With new pressure from its competitors, it will be interesting to see if Ford can join the crowd in time."

Don
I built a F-150 with the same options or as close as I could, Ford does not have a diesel 150 so I built a 3.5 sorry about that EB an 2.7 EB is minus $1,200 to the cost and what a cost!

OMG note, this truck does not have the HD payload or tow packages!!! :E
So much for the couple guys saying the Ecodiesel costs to much! Wait until the new trans comes online and see what it does to the price of a F-150! Note, my Ram listed out at $53,308 that's $2,702 more for a gas V6 Ford! - RobertRyanExplorer

Interestingly the Australian Designer, could not tell his wife in Melbourne, what Project he was working on
LOL
There's your answer Don, must be a Kangaroo..... A really fast Kangaroo at that I bet :B
What I do know that the Melbourne Design studio is also working on future US Pickups as well as a raft of other vehicles. Ford has been increasing the number of engineers working there. - Turtle_n_PeepsExplorer

Why would Ford not do an Eco boost V8?
I think for anyone saying it would not happen that should be the question. Imagine what that could put out, I think you could see it in a mustang before a truck but still. They have the ability and think it would be an exciting option.
Says the dodge guy.
Well lets see:
1 Bad fuel mileage off of boost.
2 Atrocious fuel mileage on boost.
3 Way more HP than anybody needs and for what reason?
4 Bad BSFC figures.
5 Another vehicle that will bring down CAFE ratings.
6 Terrible duty cycle because of thermal control problems.
7 Another engine that they have to develop and carry parts for. (Think billions in cost)
My turbo engine only puts out around 600 HP and it uses over a gallon of fuel per 1/4 mile run at WOT. How well do you think that will go over on the window sticker? :R - x96mnnExplorerWhy would Ford not do an Eco boost V8?

He doesn't get it? :S
Just wants to talk about diesels.
Unless they do something with the 6.2 what else would they do other than a boosted 5.0 for a Superduty gas engine.
Diesel, no boosted 5 litre. 5litre V8 Cummins about to be put in a Commercial application MH not far away
Ford has the V10 in these, very slow. Instead put in the 6.7 Diesel engine, much better. Now not too hard to see MH applications for the up coming T450/550 Transits
F650 Powerstroke engines
