Now the water heater is leaking?

I am back home but trying to get my water lines working. I installed 2 new 1/2” valves. When I connected the first and closed it after running city water for a short while the water started draining out of the other drain, assuming hot water. I turned off the city and let the water stop draining then installed the 2nd 1/2” valve. I turned the city water back on and rather quickly noticed water coming out from the water heater area. Upon closer inspection I could see a stream shooting out from the cooler type insulation. I shut off the city water and opened both valves to drain the water. Not sure what if anything I did wrong. Any thoughts on what happened?

That is what the BYPASS valving is for...isolate the WH Tank so rest of plumbing system can be used

Cold Inlet.....CLOSED
Bypass ........OPENED
Hot Outlet (If equipped)....Closed
*Many times no outlet valve is installed just a check valve in hot out

Thank you all who provided constructive insight to possible areas to look. That is what I love about this site. A wealth of knowledge.

It has got me thinking. I think I can switch the internal valves and bypass the water heater. If I can and the leak stops and the water system works I can do that until I can work on the water heater.

In order to alleviate confusion the OP should have continued the original thread, not started a new one.

You can't realistically expect people to jump from thread to thread to connect the dots and find the context...

you need to get into it a little deeper and find out exactly where the waters coming from. Could be the tank, connection or a line.

There are only 2 connections on backside of WH Tank
Cold Inlet at bottom of tank
Hot outlet at top of tank
No leaking from those connections then that only leaves the TANK
Pinholes/cracks/split
*unless it is an Atwood gas/electric then the electric element is on backside bottom center under a protective cover...gasket could be leaking

Outside compartment is 'sealed' from inside so leaks out there from water supply would not leak inside the RV
T&P Relief Valve, drain plug...possibly combustion/exhaust chamber

Apologies, I didn’t want to continue the previous post as with all the help the problem was solved and now there is this new problem. But completely understand how it’s missing pieces of the story without that context.

The new valves went on the low point drains. Right and left. Once I sealed up the system water and turned on city water within a few minutes it started streaming out of yes I believe it is the hot water heater but not at an obvious coupling, valve, or visible connection point. As you can imagine it’s hard to see back there. I’m guessing it is moving out of my realm of troubleshooting but wanted to tap the obvious experience of other campers to see if they had any ideas. Thanks for listening I hope that provides more clarity to the request.

When I did plumbing work on my last camper to add an isolation valve at the city water inlet, it was not tightened all the way. Water under pressure will come out at a decent rate!! Quickest dash tot he spigot I ever did!

NorthStar uses those "flair-it" type connection and if you don't get them seated tight, it will leak.

My guess is that OP needs to re-check the connections.

With respect to "a stream shooting out from the cooler type insulation"... I agree with others that might be the water heater... and if water is coming from behind it, then I hope OP did not compromise the connection inside it at the heater itself when doing the work.

I believe the "cooler type insulation" refers to the styrofoam jacket around the HWH. But I agree with Billtex, we need to rewind the story and understand what valves were installed where and why and to fix what problem.

I am with billtex. Your post makes little sense. Where and why did you install valves? What "drain" was the water leaking from? It also appears you had water coming out of the "cooler type insulation". I have no idea what that means. I thought the water was leaking from the hot side. What cooler?

Kind of a cryptic post. We need the story from the beginning...

I’ll take a shot; is the pressure valve closed?
