Packing wheel bearing

I was going to pack the wheel bearings on my 2003 Aliner and when I pulled the hub the grease looked nasty. I don't remember looking that bad the last time I packed them. I am going to order new seal and clean the bearings and repack.

The book calls for lithium grease. I am thinking about using synthetic after everything is cleaned up. Is anyone using synthetic?

At the risk of sounding stupid, why do the bearings need to be packed every year if there is a grease fitting on the bearing cover

I use Amsoil synthetic hi temp bearing grease. Used it for 20+ years and have had no bearings to replace, car or trailer.

Is the same used when "lubing" the bearings after re-greasing them?

Everything you need to know about grease.

White lithium grease is NOT suitable for wheel bearings.

Some types of grease are NOT compatible with other, but these are usually "specialty" greases.

  • I use Mobil 1. I don't buy the annual maintenance thing. Once you know they are done right you can go 5+ years and 30,000 miles. Using that grease fitting is asking for trouble.

Unless you are an expert why disregard the manufacturer's recommendations? Then ask me, a non-expert, for validation?
  • How do you know it's nasty? Maybe it's normal looking? No it' seldom has to be done each year.
