portable battery charging

our converter is not charging the battery and it will be some time to schedule an appt to take TT in for repairs, and in the meantime, can I connect the battery charger to the battery while the battery is connected as normal? So we can use our 12v system, Fridge, lights, etc.,

Or do I have to remove battery from housing and charge it, then put it back and connect it again.

thank you,

bill
  • 12v system went out, checked v @ battery and showed 2.4v went to CW talked to tech. tech said to check the ends of the cable which connects to the battery. did that and showed 0v, the tech said should be 14.2v at least, and if not then the converter could be the probably culprit.

connected battery charger to battery after reading post, and it initially did not charge. used truck to jump start things, once the charged showed 80% charged, I removed the cable to the truck and the charger kept charging, so far so good.

the charger got to 100% charged and switched to maint. mode. 20 mins about, the 12v started going down again, checked the battery and the voltage was going down.

so far, couple attempts have resulted with the charger showing 100% charged and the battery later begins to lose its charge.

the last time though, the battery did remain at 1/2 charge before it started losing it again.

for short term, I will go to CW and get new battery, this one has a label with jul 2012 and CW tech said its out of warranty. darn.

I don't have any paperwork that shows where the converter is, and neither did the tech. hmmm since we purchased the TT at that CW.

Its a 2013 Keystone Sprinter 300KBS, if anyone knows where the converter might be, that would help, and at least I could see if I can remove the old converter and do a drop and connect, or if I need to take it into CW.

    thanks for the help..

Yes,I do it all the time when boondocking. After a few days the system can't keep up with the draw when just plugged into the generator for a couple hours a day, then I hook up the portable battery charger to the batteries on the trailer in place.Just pop the battery cover lids and hook up your charger to increase the charge and in a short time, your back to full charge.

We carry the B&D VEC1093DBD 40AMP Portable Smart Mode battery charger as a back up plan.

Have you looked into why your current on-board converter/charger is not working. This may be as simple as replacing a couple of fuses or resetting a DC Circuit breaker to return your converter/charger back on-line.

The converter/chargers are pretty resilient but do have protection devices like FUSES and CIRCUIT BREAKERS to trip when problems occur with the battery system.

What have you done to determine the converter/charger defective.

  • Best Converter

You can just run the battery in place as the others have said. You can also replace the converter yourself. Generally it's only 5 wires, (AC hot, neutral, and ground) (DC Pos and Neg). Generally replacements are drop in to the original panel
  • Hi,

No need to remove the battery to charge it. In fact, you can use the RV while maintaining the battery with an external charger.
  • Choice a. A converter is essentially a battery charger.
