Wow I'm glad I was trolling the forum again. This is cool. I have always overloaded my 1/2 tons and get so much grief about. It's good to see 3/4 and 1 ton guys do it also. Heck my Chevy that we now call old rusty had 1000lbs over weight most of its life. It's now my daily driver. My new ford is waiting for its new tc. Wife and I like the livin lite 6.8. Awsome thread guys.

This is where I completely disagree with that article. (And it's not because I go over my sticker rating)

A manufacture adds a simple overload spring, higher capacity tires and then bumps up payload 100-2000 lbs or more....tells me the other parts of the truck are the same and well up to that task of the higher rated truck....if you address those areas. My truck is rated at 9000 lbs, same era 3500 DRW is dated at 12,200 lbs. same axles, brakes, frame....ram added overloads and two more tires on the rear.

I'm comfortable being maxed to 12k on my truck after tires and suspension was addressed. YMMV. I started with the wrong truck but made it work after research led me to this reality. I'd start with a on ton DRW next time if I knew I'd end up with a TC and large boat.

Nice Article

Well Put

"The only way to boost the payload rating is to take weight off the truck: removing the rear seat or bumper, using lighter wheels and/or tires that meet gross axle weight rating requirements, and so on."

"Although payload determination may vary by manufacturer, the GVWR and GAWR (gross axle weight rating) on the certification label are standardized and absolute. Only the manufacturer — or an upfitter that started with an incomplete vehicle — can set the GVWR. There’s no wiggle room or fudge factor here; the rating exists because above it, things can and will break. And if you overload the vehicle, a break may also break your wallet because the warranty won’t cover it."

"Be Aware As a result, you can’t increase your payload, but you can do things to make your truck more comfortable operating at or very near GVWR."

Sorry about the hijack. I just wanted to defuse the negativity I saw toward what is called weight police. They do offer a load of good thinking about safety on the road.

While you were concerned about getting thru High school I was out studying country back roads with a motorcycle.

Nearly fell out of my chair when I read that. Ha! So you found a new doctor I see....

Hope Valley is great in October. Fall colors are fantastic! Several lakes nearby. I go every year. By late October, the colors are gone, frost on the ground and maybe snow.

I'd post my sticker, but I think I removed 'em. My '06 Dodge 4x4 diesel shortbed w/crew cab loaded is 5200 Front and 7400 Rear.

Hope Valley in late September last year;

Arrived and set up camp under a full moon

Sunrise bright and clear, not a cloud in the sky

By mid day, clouds roll in

Next morning there's snow on the hills and some on the ground where camped

The trip home over Carson Pass with Elephant Back across Caples Lake

I'd fret over the hijack, but the question has been well answered and it was time for intermission.

Hmmm. That last one must be an F150 with the HD Payload package? I don't know of any F250's with 8200 GVWR and only 4800 RGAWR made in the 2000's or newer...

Looks pretty good Wayne, you must know the better amenities for this area at least, if any of you are serious about wanting to meet and greet.

Hard to tell if you guys are serious.... anyway I'm headed for the Eastern Seirra in October if you really got to have a weight party. There.... guess I'll have to supply burgers and donuts for the police and their deputies.

BUT. If the offer of hotdoggy and coors is there I wouldn't turn it down. Lol

Me too!
But with the size of these rigs can't we do both, and maybe smoke some salmon or ribs and have a stocked bar too??

Door sticker from my 2015 SRW Ram 4x4 Crew Cab Long Bed 6.4 Hemi.

Payload capacity based on the sticker is 4,300.

Front GAWR is 5,500
Rear GAWR is 7,000
GVWR is 11,300

From CAT Scale when brand new on the way home from the dealership, full tank of fuel and my 150# self.

Front Axle: 4,220
Rear Axle: 3,020
Total: 7,240

If you subtract my 150#, it's within 100# from the sticker.

I haven't scaled it yet since I've done the mods like tie downs, bedliner, winch, remove tailgate, and my usually daily junk, but from my last truck, know this is about 300# of stuff and my camper weighs 2,400 pounds loaded for a long trip. Knowing that, I'm still about 1,400# under my GVWR.
