"How To" sight poles for front cargo basket.

Used two 5/16ths fiberglass snow poles, 2 pieces of 3/8 x 4" pipe, smashed one end of them and drilled and tapped them (8/32) in the middle, then for now used black electrical tape with zip ties over the tape, we're in the rust region so didn't want to drill any more holes in the basket, will weld them on next spring, slide the snow poles down into the pipes and snug allen head screws down, poles stick up above hood about 4 inches, hope this helps.

  • How awesome, you used the same poles I bought to replace my original sight posts on my front basket (I broke one when storing it). :)
  • Good solution! That will save you a few close encounters.

I would be really leary of using wire ties in the temporary solution to attaching the bases. UV will dry those out in a very short time. I would defer to U Bolts or hose clamps. If they shatter when you are at high speed, those wands could leave a pretty serious crease in the hood.

  • That's the same thing I did except I welded the tubes to the outer corners of the rack. And you might want to spray the back of those poles with flat black paint. When you turn on the lights those poles really shine in your eyes.

  • Yah, I thought of that too, either a "U" wooden stop from the flatbed headache bar to the stop place for the camper, but thought it just might be a little too harsh. then thought of those bumpers screwed into the bed at the stop, but Torklift didn't recommend it. I would need to be able to take it off for a smooth surface.

It's not that big of a deal as I'm able to close it in to about 2-3 inches, but just nice to know when to stop and since the OP had this set up, thought I'd follow through with it...

    Always sumpt'n eh? heheh,
    One 'Bump' at a time..
  • I like the idea of the poles. Reflective? Will your headlights cause glare?

I think I would put a stop of some kind in the front, where most camper bump stops would contact the front of the bed. 4x4 going across the front???
  • Sight rods should be on the outer most front corners. That way you know if the pole clears the cargo carrier will clear.
  • Very nice.

Figured something like you did, just one of those magnetic hitch alignment poles and a block of wood w/metal plat?. Back up until I see the pole "Jiggle" as the camper comes back and hits it. Then just remove the removable wood block.

Not as fancy as yours, but helps get an idea.
