Rear View Camera

I'm curious as to what particular manufacturers mean by, "prepped for rear view camera"? Does that normally mean wired and ready to go, or just that they have a place for one?

I am getting (on order) a Rockwood 8329SS and I would eventually like to install a rear view camera. I have the EDGE Insight monitor in the truck but I don't necessarily want to use the EDGE camera. I know that almost any camera with an RCA connector should probably work and I am just trying to figure out what I might need to do to complete things.

Thanks.

I can't answer your question about a trailer being "prepped" but I can tell you that I purchased a wireless system for our rig. Installation was pretty easy, and the system worked very well for a couple of short test runs. I'll be giving it a real workout when we leave next week for a 6 week trip.

I just had this same camera delivered today. In going through the instructions I see nothing about which way to mount the camera and clearly the camera is different on one side than the other. The mount and the hood can also be mounted two ways and again no REAL instructions on which way they go. Other than, "attach camera bracket", that's it for instructions. You have any issues with this?
  • I wired our Tadi Bros rear view camera to the trailer 12v interior lighting system wires. Since we have a storage cabinet along the upper rear wall of the TT the wires were easily accessible.

The rear view camera was the best mod we made. Driving on the highway is much less stressful and the chance of crushing the car next to us when changing lanes is gone. Backing the TT is a breeze since no one has to get out and look behind us.

To keep rain off the lens, I jammed a short piece of foam backer rod between the sun shield and the body of the camera. Removable and functional.

For $349 it had better be a nice camera! I bought one many years ago that was wireless and only about $80. I only had to figure out a way to apply power to the camera, and shut it off when not needed. Because I have a motorhome, that was easy, I just ran a wire from the drivers seat that was +12 when the key is on, and then had a switch to shut it off when desired.

Now I bought this system for my van.

Wireless camera It will plug into the cigarette lighter, or I will wire it into a existing circuit. Then I can turn it on by turning on the running lights on the van. $68.

You could also power up your wireless camera on your RV by running a power line to the running lights circuit. This way it will be on all the time, and you can see what is behind you, or watch your bikes on the rack, or whatever?

    Good luck,

    Fred.

    Paid $300 for the system...camera & monitor.
The camera is wired into the running lights, so it can stay on....just have to turn on the parking lights.

  • The screen has settings for use with one or more cameras, so the full screen is used when I use the system with my camera. I drove the camper about 4 or five miles and the camera/monitor worked great. The camera is cased in metal, antenna built in. The 7" screen is really nice, and it works nicely using the suction cup attached to windshield, so it's easy to remove and stow when not in use. I'll be connected while traveling, so I'll post an update around the end of the month...after 5 nights or so on the road. Customer service is great....I broke the antenna on the monitor and they sent me a replacement free of charge. I did it via online chat.
  • scbwr, I read through the manual and spec sheet on this system and nowhere was an indication that if you used only one camera that you could configure the LCD display to use the full screen for the one camera. Since the screen is only 7" that, to my way of thinking, would be a big drawback. Otherwise it seems to be a reasonably priced and interesting system. Be sure to give us good feedback on yours.
