Repairing soft spot in Jayco Kiwi 23B

Recently we purchased a 2000 Jayco Kiwi 23B on a salvaged title. It was flooded. The previous owner also bought it on a salvaged title but went thru had all the leaks fixed, and intended on "rebuilding" it himself(flooded on the original owners). We have fixed all the flood problems except the spot by the rear bunk. Its the side wall of the opening to climb into the bed (its curved). I plan on taking the vinyl off tomorrow to start repair but curious if anyone has done this repair. If so, what did you replace the wood with? I'm thinking Luan?
Thanks in advance for any advice!!!
  • Many people just replace it with a paneling type product. Easy to cut and to install.

    Good luck.

    Vin.
  • I have pulled the 'vinyl' off, what it look like is vinyl type product, maybe eve contact paper on the inside wall...under that a piece of styrofoam. No spot spots on side walls or ceiling from the beginning of bunk thru rest of camper. I just have that small curved area to fix. I can't believe its cardboard and it definitely isn't Luan....any guess?
  • Yes I agree! Wasn't concerned about working on the floor but tearing into this fix has me a smidge nervous
  • It's probably luan, but the larger concern is that hopefully the structure that is actually holding it up is still solid.
