Soft spot help

I'm stumped. I have a 2001 19' trail lite bantam that has about a 4 foot square soft spot that starts about a foot from the door and I've got no clue where the moisture is coming from. I've sealed and resealed just about everything I can. It is covered over the winter months. I removed the linoleum in one of the cabinets that was wet and it has dried out. I'm not sure if it just wet from a previous leak and it just needs to be removed to let it dry out. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  • *Update* Two weeks until our next outing so I've attacked the entry floor and found what was at one time two 2x4's that are holding up the step. They were so wet I could squeeze out water. I've not found any other water leaks, so I'm guessing/hoping that the 2inch slit in the underbelly next to the screw from the step was the culprit and damage has slowly spread over time. The discoloring of the linoleum has stayed around the entry way and slowly spread towards the bathroom while we've owned the trailer.
I've removed all the laminate flooring in the trailer and plywood near the entrance. It appears the flooring consists of the rubber underbelly, thin plywood, Styrofoam and then more plywood. The damage appears to have stayed at the entry way, however you can where the mold/damage has steadily spread throughout.

Plan now is to repair the rip w/ some flexbend tape, use a couple of pressure tread 2x4s for the step, sand and paint the other areas that have had some mold issues. Good plan, I'm not really sure?
  • I just paid a thousand bucks to repair my 3x3 problem at the door.
I too don't know where the water came from but I will sell the camper before this new floor rots.
  • Thanks for the help. I do know there is water damage as I removed a small piece of linoleum and that area has already dried out in a days time. I see a project in my future, but after the 4th.
  • In our Travelstar, that would be directly above the fresh water tank. The floor is a little soft there from the beginning (less bracing).

Others have reported missing bracing above their tanks in other TTs.

Are you *sure* it is water damage, or could you have a soft flooring AND a little water coming from...wherever?

As already mentioned, a 4x4' section of water damaged floor can be quite unpleasant. It's worth being absolutely certain before tearing into that job.
  • Best I could tell I had the fresh water tank fill hose blow off when I stuffed a hose in it. Water went down through a hole or 2 and soaked the plywood. There is no way to dry such without pulling the linoleum and the Tyvek underfloor covering if you have such. Of course by the time it's soft, it's shot and needs to be replaced. My soft spot was about a 3' area, ended up replacing the leading 4' of the trailer. About 60 hours work. Much mess, much work, much frustration.

The soft area is does not necessarily coincide with where the problem was. When I removed the flooring I could tell by the stains water had leaked in at the 2 exterior storage doors to the front pass through and the water heater door but the soft spot was in the middle of the floor.
  • speaking from experience since im now repairing water damage i would sa that you need to first check the roof, windows, access doors, marker lights, screws and trim etc first. water may just be dripping ever so slowly and not noticable.. at first i thought my water damage was limited to my floor and i have since replaced a 5 foot x 8 foot section of my subfloor, insulation etc and about 3 feet of a wall. the water was coming into the wall from behind and ipper awning bracket, tail light and window. your best bet is to gain access under the camper to possibly assess the damage before you start removing flooring etc... honestly though if you have a 4 foot section of soft floor i would replace that section as soon as you can before it ruins a much larger section of floor. i would also check the walls. it can create alot more work and you might as well add new flooring to your TT so its not mis matched but its gives you an opportunity to personalize your camper.

good luck, i feel your pain
