speakers that let water into RV wall

I have read several posts about where speaker went bad and let water into the wall, which caused delamanation. Since my Arctic fox is the first camper I have had with external speakers I thought I would look for a solution before the problem occurs.

Is this a good solution?

I just called cruthfield on these.

they said they are designed to keep any water that gets into your car door, off the back of your speaker.

He also reminded me that you still need a hole to get the wire through, but I guess you could seal that with silicone or something.

I need to see what kind of speaker is in there now (but camper is currently covered).
Wonder if putting true marine speakers in now is a good preemptive strike?

I am still hesitant about the foam pockets because I fear the foam edge exposed between the wall and speaker could act like a sponge and soak winter into the junction it is trying to protect.

I really would like to find something shaped like a pie plate but with a flat flange, made of plastic, that would fit the bill perfectly. I am as leery with speaker pockets marked "waterproof" as I am with speakers being "waterproof".

some of my Fear comes from the fact I also own an 2011 Open Range 5er that instead of using putty they used foam double sided tape to install all the trim over any siding joints. It leaks worse than any RV I have ever owned in 30 years of RV ownership

As far as the foam baffles, I doubt finding foam baffle hats less than 2" deep will be easy or really needed. As long as the back inside diameter of baffle is close to back of speaker diameter (magnet/housing), squashing the 2"- 2 1/2" deep foam baffle should be easy to fit depth. Material is very soft, maybe 1/4" thick, also compressible. You can wad these things up into a ball. I'd be more concerned with speaker flange compressing uniformly where the foam hat laps outside.

uhhh.... the 3rd post says something about an Eagle Cap, and that is all.

Towpro - If you haven't yet purchased the speaker boxes, you might want to try and find some that are 1 1/2" deep. The rear wall on our AF996 is 1 1/2" deep in which some foil backed foam insulation (1.5") fit like a glove. On the link you provided, I only saw a 2" being offered as the most shallow depth they had, which wouldn't fit flush. See the 3rd post down for details here.

as soon as the winter cover comes off, I will see how deep the hole is, and if there is enough room behind magnet for this new piece.

If someone isn't ready to tackle the project, I can be the guinea pig on it. My camper is inside in my shop, so leaving stuff dismantled is not a problem. I can remove the speakers, figure out the best depth and then order the parts.

Sounds like I need to consider this project for my AF this winter. My 811 is at the 6 year old mark now.

Scrolling down the page, I see there's various depths of those enclosures.

You'd think RV manufacture would use a sealed plastic box to install speakers in, not relying on speakers.
Nah, that would be using common sense. :R

Besides taking away some of their income from repairs and/or new sales.

I looks like towpro found a good aftermarket solution, if the walls have enough depth for them to fit.

I used to use those years ago in the doors of my first truck with aftermarket speakers. They kept any rain and water off the speaker that might get in through the window channel.

I know there is very little room for the speaker in the camper wall, so my only concern would be if the added thickness would prevent you from mounting the speaker flush (you could use offset trim rings if you don't mind the speaker sticking out past the wall). I know if I ever get a speaker failure, I will replace mine with deeper marine speakers that will have better sound. The offset rings would allow a longer throw speaker in the shallow hole.
