Tailgate on or off

hi guys, newbie here and hoping for some feedback. The truck i bought to fit my Eagle Cap 811 does not have a tailgate, should i fit a new one to the truck bed or is the tailgate not needed? thanks!
  • The tail gate is not necessary and it's an extra 70 pounds of weight you don't need to haul.
  • On short campers, tailgate can create landing platform, but that can be done in different way.
On long camper you have to have it removed to clear camper rear.

Gotcha thanks, this Eagle Cap 811 is made to fit both short and king beds, so I wonder if I should just leave it off
  • No way my Bigfoot would ever fit on my Dodge if the tailgate was still on the truck. The back of the camper - much wider than the tailgate opening - fits snugly up against the truck's taillights. With the tailgate on, the cables that support the tailgate are in the way.

Earlier you said you don't have one, so in essence, you don't have one to put on.

What's a King bed? We haven't heard that term in reference to a truck bed.
  • Off, especially if you are near your weight limit. That 70 to 100 lbs can make all the difference.
Also if you leave it down it can get damaged with pebbles etc of a rough road.
  • I always take it off, for reasons others have mentioned. I do use a hitch rack where I store some plastic tubs, one for my septic hose, the storage in the "bumper" on the NL is too tight for a standard fitting and my leveling blocks in another tub. It is not that heavy and doesn't affect the ride.

    Regards....

Do you read the post or just the title of the three before responding.
And for everyone else’s sake , you don’t necessarily have to remove the tailgate and it’s not necessarily a function of the length of the camper, so no idea what you’re talking about.

If the weight of the tailgate is an issue, one has bigger problems.
In the 1000s of miles or 10000s of miles I’ve traveled with a tailgate down, camper or no camper, I have yet to sustain any tailgate damage, chips or dings while it was down. This is also not generally an issue.
However, if the OP doesn’t have a tailgate, it is a question of whether one is necessary or not and it’s not, with that camper or most all others possibly all others.
