If the weight of the tailgate is an issue, one has bigger problems.
In the 1000s of miles or 10000s of miles I’ve traveled with a tailgate down, camper or no camper, I have yet to sustain any tailgate damage, chips or dings while it was down. This is also not generally an issue.
However, if the OP doesn’t have a tailgate, it is a question of whether one is necessary or not and it’s not, with that camper or most all others possibly all others.
