television antenna leak

I have a Jayco 28BHS and have never had any issues with leaks. However, on our last trip, I had the television antenna up and during a hard rain storm, I noticed a leak coming from the handle on the ceiling that you turn to raise and lower the antenna. The water was coming out of the antenna adjustment and did not seem to get the ceiling wet. I lowered the antenna and the leak stopped. I've had this camper for 5 years and this is the first time this has happened and we've watched TV many times during the rain. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.
  • About twice a year you are to remove the plastic plug that is on top where the antenna mechanism is on the roof ( by the way all this is in the maint. section of the book that comes with the antenna) and spray some silicone in it this lubricates the " O " ring and mechanism never use WD-40 the plastic plug may also be cracked the are a couple of dollars I put teflon tape on the threads of the plug on mine but I guess it may bot be needed if you have misplaced the book that comes with the antenna you can go to winegard dot com all the info on preventive maintenance will be on line
  • This is a common problem. I don't recall the fix. Have you done a search?
  • Mine was a simple as a tree limb had pulled the boot up. Thought I'd best add the boot that the coax cable passes thru.
  • If its dripping from the handle stem , a common problem is a worn nylon bearing in the stem of the crank . Sometimes they just dont sit right from the beginning and leak ,or they wear over time from use, just replace it .

    Access from inside the rv.

Its a common problem if you have one that looks something like this.
page 3 fugure 5 'nylon bearing'
there should be a set screw on the side of the handle to release it.
Just take it apart and replace the 0-ring. Try to match it up at a hardware store or.....
If you still have the manuals that came with the antenna it will show you the breakdown of parts...if not google the make/model for the parts breakdown.

AS im looking into this more...im correcting myself....
On p 7 , 'ordering parts' package #7 you will see an o-ring that was also replaced when my nylon washer was replaced. That o-ring leaking water was probably the reason why water traveled down to the nylon washer. Both washers were replaced at the same time so im not 100% sure which one of them caused the leak. But now that i examine the parts closer, im thinking the 0-ring. End result was, the leak stopped.
Look into that o-ring if the other things don't work.
  • Had this problem on our 5er, a little caulk and leak be gone. :)

This might work. Go up onto the roof and pull the boot off the cable that goes from the antenna to the roof mounting plate. Fill the boot with silicone caulk and put it back. This is a common problem.
